    I actually agree.

I'm not the biggest fan of the armed troops, but not being able to join because you're out of shape and your school's to blame? I'd be pissed.

I know some schools offer many choices (My school had a hamburger line, pizza line, normal lunch line, salad bar, and a sandwich bar), but most kids probably won't pick a salad over pizza. I'm glad something's being done about it, to be honest.

In our school the hot dogs serve as an effective bouncy ball and the pizza is cardboard with cheese.I'm glad they are trying to make school lunches at least a little healthier because I know what they are serving us now is not healthy at all, and our student council has fought for the past 3 years to get vending machines and we still haven't gotten any because "they are to expensive".

Oh wow, now there is an impact of obesity I had never considered before o_O

Ironic, we fatten cattle and livestock up to go and die, and here they are trying to slim them down to send off to war.

I agree with what they are saying; something really does have to be done about the issue of weight and health, and those lessons are best learnt at a young age. I don't know though, something just doesn't sit right with it; it is like not letting them be kids, instead grooming them for the armed forces.

Besides, even if they did change school lunches then who is to say it will have any kind of real effect? Something similar was done here and it was met ith a lot of resistance, to the extent parents were sneaking in McDonalds to their kids at lunch time (how supportive they are of keeping their children healthy /sarcasm)

I think instead it should be focused on encouraging a healthy lifestyle you know? At the end of the day being fit is about more than just having a calorie controlled diet.

This is odd for me, I actually fully support the military and our guys who are out there, but this I don't like. Or rather, I don't like the thoughts behind it.

Is it bad that a found that irony really really funny?

I admit I'm not fond of the Military but I will concede the fact that human species, paranoid as we are, need some form of defensive measure to help us sleep soundly at night. That said, unless the US has an extremely pressing need for 7 Million people to slim up and sign up, I'm not really seeing what the huge issue is.

If people wanna join up, then the weight issue is their's, and they need to take a different mentality towards their health. What I'm against is the higher-ups making the decisions for them. Like CTR said, it sounds too similar to rearing cattle for my taste. Taking action by making people realise earlier on the benefits of a healthier lifestyle (The one instance where I will support mindless propaganda, as long as niether the Govt. or Military are involved) is the only way that this really works, or sending people on a guilt trip when they actually have gotten overweight (Even then, it's not guaranteed).

At the end of the day, I could claim that anything is a "National Security Threat" because of what might end up happening because of it. *coughcoughIraqWarcoughcough* If you wanna join the Army, then isn't it really common sense that you should be in some positive kind of physical condition? Just sayin', but something about this whole claim seems... off. I can't really put my finger on it.

Haha! Now that is a common use of food, to sustain whatever we want to keep alive, whilst what we don't is processed into food for others.

Fat cells seem to be a key component in our society today, with it affecting all sectors of our community. I can't recall if a human civillisation has ever reached what we have, that is, being wealthy enough as an economy to allow over-indulgence in the whole of a country. I think we may be the first. And as such we have no real idea what we can do about it, and so we makethe situation better with what we have.

I'm not entirely bothered about the army's recruitment drive, now or in the future if the problem is purely physique related. The physique can change with training and exercise, an easy thing to rectify unlike if we were trying to inspire men and women to go out and kill others in the name of national security. That is tougher to accomplish.

I'm not opposed to a military force per se, but any man who thinks themselves better than me just because they hold a gun and a rank to kill then they are a fool.

i read about this a few days ago at another online story. i noticed that in comments sections, people were upset that the military only wants this so they can enlist more. but that reason doesn't bother me, because its' not like they're forcing anybody to join. it's a good idea to do encourage a healthy lifestyle. though i don't know if it would actually work, i remember at my old highschool there WAS a line for hot food (like pizza, cheesesteak, you know all the stuff that's bad for you) and one for cold food (like hoagies and salads) but hardly anybody chose the healthy foods. and if they eliminate the good hot foods, students might actually decide to pack their own lunch which could actually be more unhealthy than what's being served at school. i think that the lack of excercise contributes more to obesity than to bad food choices.

In high school we always joked that our food was "grade D but edible" and bad enough even the Army wouldn't eat it even if they were stationed in the middle of nowhere with nothing else around. How right we were.

I too had a school that offered many options at lunch time-main entree, pizza, soup, salad, cheeseburger, or chicken sandwich. I can count on one hand the number of kids that would opt for a salad over, say, beef stroganoff or something.

Nice to see something is being done to try and make things healthier, but I'm kind of having a hard time seeing why the military is so concerned other than the fact that the kids are so fat now that they aren't in fit enough shape to enlist.

It amazes me that this is coming from the military than the government (cuz i'm sure all of us have hear the commercials from Michel Obama), but i do see a point in this. If we didn't have a big enough military, we could be more easily targeted and invaded. But i do agree that lunches need to be healthier. I've never been able to really a school lunch, only if I didn't bring it that day. Maybe this could finally give a little push to make the lunches "greener" so to speak.
