I was going to finish it after my exams (had watched up to episode 9) but I figured it be easier to watch them all today. AND WATCH THEM ALL I DID! I regret nothing. <3
I'm glad you enjoyed it. A really well-done series in my opinion, even if Trigger got rushed and had to cut corners with some action scenes (which will just be rectified anyway whenever they can do an OVA of the series like Gainax did with Gurren Lagann.)
I need to watch this. I know I will love it. I'm sure I will obsess over it. I therefore fear watching it ;-;
Couldn't really care any less about the animation budget here, the real cuts were made in the plot. Like pretty much everything with Nudist Beach after Tsumugu's second appearance was dropped and that made me sad because I like the Tsumugu.
This is also what I felt. Despite this it was an absolutely ridiculous show but Trigger pulls off ridiculous very well and it was quite solid.
It was still a good series, I just prefer my endings to be determined by the writers and less by the resources. For those who didn't know, they actually finished production work on the final episode the DAY IT AIRED. That's how little time they were working with because of their funds and why they couldn't get the extra couple episodes that it would have taken to smooth out the ending and since this was their first original series they couldn't really make it a two season affair either. Anyways, still the strongest show of 2013.
I hear that. Donnie and I were both shouting WHY ARE YOU STILL HERE at Mikisugi and Tsumugu throughout the second half.
Nudist Beach got jobbed so hard, it was really hard to watch. ESPECIALLY WHEN WE HAD CLEARLY ESTABLISHED THAT THEY WERE IN POSSESSION OF SOMETHING THAT COULD ****ING ELIMINATE LIFE FIBERS I greatly enjoyed Kill la Kill but Trigger definitely got rushed story wise or just have ass writers since there were a bit too much red herrings and things that went nowhere. Sangeyama develops an ability that puts him on greater footing then the main character. Only to get his ass kicked by everyone and everything for the rest of the show Tsumugu's sister? You know the one that mysteriously died? Who cares about that right? I also felt it was kind of "cheap" for lack of better terms that all the major villains just ended up killing themselves Now go watch Samurai Flamenco
I actually liked that a lot. I hate "power level" shows where if one character can beat another character, then they can also beat everyone the other character can beat - because that's not how fighting works. It's not that predictable. Sometimes you get somebody who's just really good at beating a particular person, knows their ins and outs, or just has a weapon or strategy they can't deal with, but is otherwise not very useful. In Sanageyama's case he's implied to be the toughest of the Devas, so he gets the hard jobs... the irony being that it makes him look weak, because the struggle is much greater in general. Consider how long the battle against Takarada took compared to the other schools on the Battlefield Trip - The rest of them were pushovers, while Osaka took most of two episodes. And again, when he's fighting a losing battle against the REVOCS drones - He's only shown in dire straits, but you have to consider that Blade Regalia held out the longest, so he must've put up a better fight than the other Devas. The trouble is that he's brash and charges headlong into danger, which works sometimes and doesn't most of the time. Ryuuko's character arc takes her in a different direction: The stronger she gets, the more it becomes apparent that she's easily rattled. After triumphing over three of the Four Devas where she previously struggled to beat one, Nui effortlessly shatters her focus and makes her go berserk. When she recovers the pieces of Senketsu and fights Satsuki to a draw, she finds out that she's played right into Satsuki's hands - bringing Nudist Beach out of hiding so they could be eliminated. When she wakes up and goes apesh[plain]i[/plain]t on the drones, she then proceeds to run right into a trap and get brainwashed and turned against her teammates. Despite her potential for rapid growth, she's often more of a liability than an asset. Every character has explicit strengths and weaknesses, both in terms of sheer combat skill and the way their psychology plays into the fights. That's what makes it interesting, and how they maintain the tension: Not every fight is just "WILL THEB AD GUY BEATY THEH GOOID GUYU?!!?!?!?!"
But then what's the point of having him defeat the main character if it's not going to amount to anything then saying "Look guys, he can beat the main character"? He's not a threat to anyone relevant Nobody has to overcome him on a physical OR mental level. Not the main character, not anyone. He was literally just there to be Yamcha for the rest of the series
Because it teaches her that simple tricks only go so far, and she needs to actually get stronger. It shows that she's not ready at that time. He beats Takarada once his Goku Seifuku arrives. He contributes in equal measure with the other Devas to the fights against Nui and Ryuuko. He even catches Ragyou off guard. Ryuuko expects to, until their fight is interrupted. But that was the point. It was being superceded by Ragyou's desires. All of that had been orchestrated by Satsuki to train Ryuuko, but that moment was basically saying it didn't amount to shit in the face of Ragyou's plans. Otherwise it probably would've been a pretty spectacular fight. Yamcha never got hyped up to be as strong as Goku though.
But she never applied what she learned from said fight to any of her other fights considering she beat every other Deva by tricking them in similar ways. We all damn well know Takarada wasn't a threat to anyone. And in those other cases he STILL manages to get jobbed and Nui, Ryuko and Ragyou end up going after bigger fish to fry
I didn't say that there weren't some cuts made to the plot though, did I? I was also disappointed with how Nudist Beach got pretty much shafted in the finale (though they still did contribute a lot before that, just not in the battles unfortunately.) And Houmaru become a nobody; I still don't know exactly what she was doing in the finale. And Junketsu could have had more of an effect on the finale, since he is a Kamui too and all. Even with these flaws though, this is my favorite anime in years.
