OK, so here is the plan. Go to college, get a communications degree, minor in Theater (be in as many plays as possible) and then go out East and get a nice job/ try out for broadway. if the acting doesnt work, atleast i have a degree. right? well...that was the plan till a local independant film maker wants to make a film in my home town. and he wants to show it off at film festivals... the problem... i leave for college, the guy seems like a jerk (kinda) and i would be expected to travel 5 hours back home every weekend to shoot my scenes... my gut is telling me no. im worried its gonna **** up my college experince, and i have a good feeling that this film isnt gonna happen fast enough...you know? it just seems like too short of a time line for me. so basically my question is... should i audition tommorow...or wait untill after college to trying being an actor? i dont know if i should take this chance... help?
One one side you risk college On the other you risk losing a chance to do some acting that may or may not present an opportunity again If you are truly passionate about college (and not a whole lot about acting) then go there If you are truly passionate about acting (and not a whole lot about college) then go there I say take the chance of trying out because you may not get the opportunity again.
There's also a chance you might not get the part... My Advice: Try it, and if it starts to mess up your college life (like academics for instance) tell the director. And if he doesn't want to deal with it then quit. And never sign anything without have a lawyer look at it. You could get stuck in a nasty situation with those loopholes.
If the guys seems fishy, you don't know how this will turn out. You don't know that he's going to show it at film festivals, either. It's just his words. 5 hours seems tough. If you have to drive, even worse. maybe taking a bus and studying on it on the way could help. But college is a very important thing. Here's the thing. It's never too late to go back to college. But this may be your only opportunity to do something like this for a while. I'd say try it, if you don't like it, quit.
Have you already payed for your tution fees? If not I would say definately give it a shot. Because you never know what is going to happen to that film. It could get you recognized even earlier than you planned. Or it could get only a little amount of attention however that's one more credential to list at your next audition, and that could be the weight that tips the balance. If fees have been paid then I would let it go, there are other oppurtunities... Either way you will have a form of qualification for what you are passionate about. With regards to your feeling that the film isn't going to happen fast enough - neither does university... I know I haven't given a lot of strong advice, but I hope I have brought up a point you haven't thought about yet...
