Hey I like making videos, most recently a series called VideoGame Trailers... Kingdom Hearts Style, and am looking for a video editing software that can do all of the things that Windows Movie Maker 2.6 and Vista can do and more. Also I am looking for software that is FREE or is very cheap. Please help.
P.S. I use Windows Vista and Windows 7 operating systems.

Well Sony Vegas is good but it can run expensive. You can try it for thirty days, it's great stuff!!

Please use search. The actual search is a little screwed up, so the best thing to do when looking for threads like this is to type a keyword into the title field and look at the similar threads recommended to you before posting.

Good, free software is usually too much to ask for, legally speaking. I suggest experimenting with free trials of different software (Vegas, Premiere, Pinnacle, Ulead, etc.), seeing what you like, and then getting the consumer version which generally runs from $40-80. It's well worth the money, and if you're really serious about editing you may consider upgrading to the professional edition later.

Note that some threads mention Adobe After Effects. That is not where you want to start, it is meant to add extra effects onto a more finished product rather than perform all of the editing. It also will probably be some of the most expensive filmmaking software you can find, anyway, perhaps barring Avid. The majority of AMV editors, in my experience, use Sony Vegas.

Try the free trial for MAGIX Movie Edit Pro (preferably HD 16 Plus the latest version)
It sounds like you're working towards organization of clips in order to make montages, commentaries, or whatever.
This program provides a very organized work space, but takes a while to learn. The effects are quite limited, and as Stardust said, After Effects would be useful to master once you've mastered a program meant for editing.
