So, I thought this might be an interesting discussion, and I thought it best to have it here, with so many fine writers here. Do you like to listen to music while you write. I find it helps me focus and I because I'm a musician too, I like to type along to the beat of the piece/song xD.

I prefer to listen to classical music or folk music when I write, although I've started listening to Anime OSTs / Game OSTs and stuff. The varying pace, and the fact that often these don't have any words to distract me, helps me to focus on writing.

So, yeah, anyone else listen to music while writing? Feel free to give some examples too, I'll post some here :D.

    - Mendelssohn Violin Concerto in E minor
    - Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto in C minor
    - Bruch Violin Concerto in G minor
    - Dvorak's New World Symphone in E minor
    - Puella Magi Madoka Magica OST
    - Bakemonogatari OST
    - Homestuck Music (all of it)
    - So many sweet folk music things I randomly put on my spotify playlist.

As a side-note, I'd definately reccomend Spotify for claffical music, because there's such a big selection, you can get around the "5 listens per track" rule for free, and premium is pretty cheap for what you get.

I do listen to music sometimes, because the lyrics sometimes help me think of different games/books/movies I've played/read/seen, which help me with ideas. Other times I can't do with any kind of noise because it just distracts me. But I don't usually listen to classical or romantic or anything of the sort. I mean, I'll listen to Carl Orff's Carmina Burana, but that's about it. I'll usually either listen to my favorite bands(which includes Rise Against, Linkin Park, Skillet, Bullet For My Valentine, Thousand Foot Krutch, All That Remains, ect.), or whatever is on my youtube favorites. Sometimes though I will just listen to instrumental music like "Light Rays of Hope" from Final Fantasy X-2. It really does just depend on the mood I'm on though

Well, mostly when i write I tend to take an affinity to more instrumental/some lyrical songs.

Probably the most frequent songs I've listened to are Somnus, Flare, Sis Puella Magica and Dearly Beloved (Days).

I find I usually play the first three whenever I write something about a dystopian society (rare) or whenever something is emotionally charged. As for Dearly Beloved, to be honest, that usually gets played whenever I need a type of overworld music to help me craft the world I'm about to write.

Also, sometimes I just put last.fm on and let whatever is recommended to me play, lolol.

And I play Shook (Mobb Depp x Sigur Ros) as well.

I don't believe I do. If I have music on, whatever it is, I find myself distracted. I use music to brain storm ideas for my work, but not when I actually write.

Music is such an excellent tool when combined with writing since the flow and dynamic of various chosen musical pieces permits the author to develop a scenario more fantastically. As such I have a huge amount of music that I listen to whilst writing.

Part in part, the tune I listen to at the time of writing a specific scene is usually linked to that scene in itself. For example, if I were to write a harrowing and catastrophic futuristic dystopian scene of sorts, something such as this would fit nicely. Something more solemn, sombre, and silent would be more along the lines of this. Mood music truly gets the writer into the mood of the writing in itself, though it can be very versatile. I also effectively apply it to character leitmotifs. Typically, however, I agree with tummer's train of thought in utilising music by connecting it to various scenes and the like, be they straight emotional or associate with fictional works.

Using a specific example, Sforzatoquest, though not prose in itself, relies on a great deal of myself looking through and listening to various tidbits of music while developing the plot.

I listen to music a lot when I'm writing, it helps me get a feel for whatever mood I'm trying to set. lol, I actually have a playlist called "Music that Inspires Writing." It's not very big, but there are several songs on it.

I've got some from Lord of the Rings, some from Narnia, some even from Kingdom Hearts. I write a lot of fantasy, and so music like this really helps to get me going if I can't figure out where to take the story next.

Well, it really depends on what I'm writing. For the most part, I can't write without some music playing in the background. I tend to pick out songs that I've become obsessed with at that particular time, but I have quite a few that I'm listening to now (I'm writing the next update to a story of mine as I type this).

    -Just Be Friends~Luka Megurine
    -World Is Mine~Miku Hatsune
    -I LIke You, I Love You~Rin Kagamine
    -Jabberwocky Jabberwocka~Rin and Len Kagamine
    -Realize It Already!~Miku Hatsune

Right now, it's clearly a Vocaloid trend, but it helps me get into the mood of writing. It gives me energy, or at least feigns the feeling, but that's just what happens with me.

When I write stories, I usually make a playlist with themes for various parts of the story to help invoke the mood of the story in my head and hopefully I'll be able to get that down on paper. Usually the songs will vary for the type of scene that I'm trying to write such as an action scene having song that's fast-paced or a romantic scene having slow music for example. One thing that What and I are trying in our story, Disconnect, is assigning certain instruments, sounds or genres of music to our characters, locations and even Heartless. We've even caused some confusion around others by saying that his song is very "Insert Name Here" and people are like "wut?".

My personal favorites for writing so far are:

    Touhou Arranges. ALL OF THEM!
Anything by Yuki Kajiura. ALL OF HER MUSIC!
    Kingdom Hearts OST
    Persona 3 & 4 OST
    SayCeT
    Infected Mushroom
