At school in Australia, teachers let kids write things in tests like: c u l8r. And I think that's crap. Maybe with cell phones, but not at school. what do you think?

I don't even write like that while texting, and it is crap if we were to do in here at college we'd be told off, even in schools, maybe you should tell them it's not right and they shouldn't let the kids do it

For our economics exams, in the supported choice questions we are allowed to shorten words to save time, like Demand, we will just put D. But in general. No. It doesn't show good grammer, and personally, I don't take the person seriously, and to me it makes you seem dumber in my eyes. I see my friends do it on myspace, and to me it looks silly. In text's it's ok, you need to be quick since typing is so slow. But since all my friends have good typing skills, so they could easily for proper sentences. But they see the internet different to what I do.

What the heck! Why would they do that? I thought schools were supposed to teach us good grammar! Sometimes I use abbreviations in my notes so I can write faster, but they shouldn't do that!

  11. In my English class if you write something like that you get an hour detention =/. If I did it on my test I would automatically get a 0. .

But yes, typing like that is stupid. Sadly I used to be stupid enough to do it. But, i'm trying to improve my grammar. And since I came here I have done so drastically.

    That's pure blasphemy.
Teachers are supposed to teach use how to use good grammar. It's illogical for a teacher to allow students to "shorten" words like "for" to "4". That's going to have an effect on the student in the future, whether soon or later.

I agree, it is gonna have an affect on the kid in the future. What if they spelled stuff that way when they are applying for a job? The employer will definetly reject them for that because it makes them seem like they are really dumb, when they may be really intelligent, and suitable for the job. It's dumb, and poor grammar.

If you were to use language like that here during exams or just class room tests you would loss out on marks even if your answer is right. Especially in English. I use to write like that when sending emails n' stuff but i stopped that as i saw no point.

I never typed like that. I could see on a cellphone since you don't have all the keys, unless using a Blackberry or something of course. But to use it on a test? I know if I wrote like that on an essay I'd get a 0 on it.

Besides to substitute numbers and shorten words seems just unnecessary.

    Who doesn't?

My school is pretty stricted about grammer too and with good reason. You can't go out through life saying, "L-O-L!" or "O-M-G!"

I mean I sometimes do this on MSN because I'm lazy but for things like writing, English assignments, exams, I always use proper grammer.

Yeah, I agree...using chatspeak at school is a good way to lower your rep. Of course, there are mistakes, such as the time I said "WTF?" when I was math class. Oh well...just stay away from it as much as you can to avoid developing habits!
