What causes people label each other the way they do? Such as "Prep", "Loner", "Goth", etc?

Well, it's what you do. You can't not put labels on things. I'm fine with labels. Some people take them too seriously. Those people are insecure and worry about their popularity too much.

i think 50% is the characteritics of the catagorized people
and the other 50% is like mish said, people just categorize things naturally.

    certain cliques, cultures, habits, personalities.

also i think that people categorize themselves, didn't you go emo?

I agree with Mish and Hahannuh. We all categorize pple naturally. I don't like it but still i do sometimes before I actually meet the person and get to know them. I think it's the fact that we judge pple too fast before we know them is when we get our labling/categorizing wrong.

I don't think labeling people in this way is right. Sure, it's fun to have a jab with this "Groups", but in the end, it's just totally stupid.

In school, I usually zone out, leaving a odd expression on my face. People think I look sad. I wear "darker" colors. People call me emo.

I don't give a crap what people think of me. I'm myself, and I think that they are way too fast to judge. I presented my Health project yesterday, and I used humor. Everyone said (Ironically, even my teacher did) "Who would have thought?!"

The main point is that people are just being themselves, and people shouldn't judge them by what's on the outside, but what's on the inside. Although it's pretty much human nature to discrimate others for their diffrences.

Labels come from the need to identify someone on first impression. Seriously think about it. What would we think if we didn't have some way to label someone. Guys look at an attractive girl and think "she is hot" A label. We look at an overweight man who doesn't shower and think "nerd, D&D player" (wow...I do that but I'm not fat and ugly, I swear Dx) Its a way for us to identify someone without knwoing them, before getting to know them.

actually mistymighty i have to disagree with you that people are trying to be themselves. i understand a lot of people do, but there are a lot of people who change their personality (regardless of their appearance) to be accepted, liked, hated, whatever. honestly, i don't think a single teen will always try to be themselves.

I hate it when people are nerds just because they are smart, but those are the ones who are gonna have all the money in the future... Hehehe
It just isn't fair to discriminate somebody because they aren't the popular type... It really cheeses me off!

The "Cognative Miser" effect of psychology states that human beings do not wish to use their brain more than absolutely necessary and its natural response is to simplify things as much as it can, i.e. putting a label on someone you probably won't have to deal with too often rather than putting thought into the deep inner-workings of said person.

I'm not making this up. I took a psych class last semester.

And, to move this aside but still stay on the overall topic...

There's no such thing as "Normal", so ipso facto there cannot be a thing such as "Abnormal." That's my two cents.

People judge you on what you wear, music you listen to and the way you act.

I'ts natural for teenagers to do that, it is a way for them to feel secure about themselfs and find the right group of friends, it just happens. I'm one of those who doesn't totally fit into a certain click, and neither does my friends, we call them 'Casuals.'

Well labels are just signs for the way people act and/or the way they are personally.

Labels like 'prep' are for people that are very popular and seem smart, but are actually *******s and goofoffs. These sortof things, like for 'geeks' and 'nerds,' are for the kid who reads, plays dungeons(sp?) and dragons, has glasses, wears nice clothes, etc..

Honestly, it is just another social caste that I find pointless. But it is fun to make jokes out of every now and then.

But, the main reason people are forced to do that is because it's mainly to make a hierarchy of teenagers. And it usually determines who you hang out with.

I fall under pretty much all of the categories, as I have friends from pretty much every one.

It's because of prejudice. Once people think they know one person. They judge another person, who acts the same way, the same thing.

I think some people put labels on others as they want people to dress, act and talk the same. I agree with RoxasDualEx, it is a form of easy prejudice. It's easier to say person A dresses like person B so they must be the same, even though they may be totally different. Humans like categories and labeling things help a lot of people understand the world around them with minimum effort. It's harder to get to know people and learn that everyone is different.
