It's nothing we haven't heard of before. But it really makes me angry to learn that it's been taken to the level of the United States wanting to exterminate every Pit Bull on American soil just because the actions of a few led to the abuse and mistreatment of these animals.

Furthermore, the Pit Bull has a long and proud history which includes protecting the American Soldiers in World War I. Is the US willing to overlook that history because of the owner's abuse?

Don't blame the breed for the actions of their owners. And don't judge because of the actions of people like Micheal Vick. The government should be dealing with the owners rather than the dogs.

Also it's a Wikipedia link but it provides a good deal of information on the breed in general.

Personally, I think the killing of Pit Bulls is just plain nonsense. I'm sorry that unthoughtful owners care less about their own Pit Bulls when they put them in fights with others for money. It's plain foolish. Innocent owners and their pet Pit Bulls shouldn't be dragged into this because of ridiculous people wanting their own money. Not all Pit Bulls are this way and they shouldn't be punished for it. There used to be this insanely sad video on YouTube about all of the Pit Bulls who belonged to loving families and how the US wanted to get rid of them completely, when they did nothing wrong. Even if they have a certain instinct that seems threatening, they can't exactly do anything about it. It's INSTINCT.

I absolutely disagree with this, even if they are dangerous. It's stupid to kill an animal for it's owner's misbehavior and it's own instinct.

Pitbulls need a ton of training... With any dog bred for fighting, guarding or attacking...

They need a ton of work. They can be the sweetest dogs ever, but you need to train and raise them to be like that. I worked at a place where a woman had two pitbulls who you could play with and pet 24/7 without a problem...

I've also seen the same breed of dog without any abuse attack people, same with rotweilers, dobermans, german shepherds, and a lot of other guard dogs.

I think it's wrong killing them off, but you need education and a lot of work with any type of that dog. Unfortunatly, a lot of people don't realize it and just do what they want with it, which brings on these attack.

Another note in this is that there's dog fights, most happen from pitbulls because they're trained to be fighting dogs. As soon as a dog is even started on that training and it's saved, it has to be euthanize it because of that mentality. It's sad, and it's not their fault.

A lot of people believe that Pitbulls are aggressive, mean, they will practically kill you if you go near it.But if you train them right they will be the sweetest animals.I know exactly one pitbull and its my friend's dog.Her name is Alee. And when I first saw her I was scared.I thought it would attack me since it didn't know me.But my friend and her family trained her not to attack unless threatened. This is just plain cruel if they do end up ending a breed of dogs.

That is so wrong. If they have been in history textbooks for the war, we instead kill them cause of an owner's abuse? That is not something nice to do.

I used to deliver papers when I was 12-14 for money and on the route was a house with 4 pitbulls at it that would come out and greet me sometimes when let out in the yard to play. I'd pet them all and toss sticks for them and they were amiable and great dogs. I've known other people to have pitbulls and they were fine.

There are reasons why they want to do this pitbull purge sadly but I don't back it at all. One is that when a pitbull bites, their jaws actually clamp down tight and they are very very hard to pry off something. It makes them more of a danger than some other dogs if the pitbull is that mad to actually bite a person so full force. The other reason is the stupid ass lame idiots who train the dogs for dog fights. This is a big thing in some areas of the country to include major cities where people raise dogs to fight and gamble on the outcome. It SUCKS and I wish they'd stop it. Because pitbulls have the jaws they do though...it makes them great contenders for it. Unfortunately, it seems very hard to stop these people from training the dogs in such a manner and some have been bred over a good amount of time to do this so it can make the demeanor of some pitbulls bad.

I do not see the harm in having pitbulls as regular dogs and have never heard of one just up and attacking someone for no reason where I live. There are some legitimate 'attacks' by dogs and I can say I was bitten a couple times being dumb myself. People often say that they did 'nothing' to warrant an attack from a dog, but often times they don't raise the dog right, hit it or do something stupid. At this point I'm more thinking that instead of a purge on any type of dog, perhaps people ought to have to go to a training course to own a 'big dog' (not those little dogs because eh, they can't do much if they wanted to) in order to have it and a lot of this mess would probably calm down. It would also prevent those charged with animal abuse such as dog fighting etc to not be able to get another dog for such a purpose. As much as it is an inconvenience to some of us who have been raised around animals, I'd certainly take a week or two course on handling dogs like pitbulls, dobermans, roddies, german shepherds etc if I wanted one, knowing that I learned something new (or didn't since I've raised dogs and cats for years) and that it would help screen people from getting their hands on a dog to put into this lifeway of abuse.

    That's sad.
It is the owner's fault that THEIR pit bull attacked someone due to improper care and abuse.

They should arrest the owner instead of killing all pit bulls.

That is extremely true. Its all the owner's fault that the dogs are aggressive with strangers. What made me mad was that my mom is actually agreeing with this.

Are they seriously going to try to do that? Pit Bulls are like the mascot for the US Marines (devil dogs) they can't just do that can they? It's similar to saying hey let's go kill all the bears in California! If that's true then that is just really messed up because dogs are living things too and it shouldn't matter what type of dog it is. It's like saying oh my god that old man just crashed his car and killed someone let's kill all old people because they are a danger on our roads. If one has done nothing wrong, one should not be punished.

I think that if they have their rabes shots and a ton of training then they won't hurt you. It's basically ignorance.

There have been many cases over the past year in the UK with pit bull and similiar breeds of dogs killing or seriously harming young children. I suppose it is to be expected considering that the breeding to turn them into fighting dogs has been going on for many generations.

With dogs it comes down to having the right dog for the right lifestyle. If you get the wrong breed of dog of course you are going to have problems. Thorough research needs to take place before anyone gets a dog. Otherwise you are just being grossly irresponsible, putting yourself, the dog and anyone around you at risk.

I personally think that people who want these types of dogs should have a special permit, and they should be tested for their competence in handling the dog.

A pitbull's jaw is stronger than a full grown lion. In fact, they have one of the strongest jaws and bites out of any animal alive. Beats a wolf, lion, cheetah, almost everything. Second to maybe a shark, but that's besides the point. They are very dangerous, but it's awful to just kill off a breed of anything for that reason alone. I've know many pitbulls and they've all been wonderful dogs. The ones you need to worry about are the ones being neglected and forced to rely on their instincts. Purge the owners who neglect these dogs, not the dogs themselves.

(Hyenas have the strongest jaw.... just saying).

If a pit bull is vicious or violent, it's because of how a human has treated him/her or trained him/her. Though it is in the nature of the breed, a proper training of a pit bull can make him/her as friendly as a golden retriever. There's a pit bull in my neighbourhood that wouldn't hurt a fly, and he loves children. It's all about how the dogs are raised.
It makes me sick whenever I hear about a case of organized pit bull fighting.
