Is it a bad idea to own the game before the system?

I've own the game before the system once before and it was Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2. On Friday I got Spirit Camera The Cursed Memoir just because it's a spin off to Fatal Frame. I don't own a 3DS (yet) but I'll have one soon enough. But for right now... I'll just use my cousin's 3DS Lol.
I believe some may think it's a bad idea and some may think it's a way to motivate you to get the system if you do (which totally is).

So anyway, have any of you own the game before the system before?
If not, what do you think when people do that?

I actually plan to do that soon (for DDD) because though I can' t afford a 3DS right now I know I' ll buy one eventually. I' ve had a hard time finding specific oldies in the past (hell, I can' t even find Re-Coded) and I don' t like buying stuff online, so now when I come across a game I' m really interested in I just buy it immediately.

I wouldn't say its a bad idea. There's a higher chance on finding the system in stores than the game. So its better safe than sorry. I've bought KH:Recom before having the ps2 which is something Ill never regret because after going back to the stores already having the ps2 the game wasn't there anymore. And more reason to buy it if by pre-ordering it you'll get some nice things :)

If you're absolutely certain that you're going to be getting one, then no reason not to. I would if there was some kind of limited edition release that I really wanted as well. I guess I would have that initial thought of what if something falls through or an unexpected expense comes up and I can't buy it, but worst comes to worst, you can just sell the game(s) online. If they're in new condition especially (I'm assuming you had no reason to open it without a system), you can usually get close to what you paid back.

If the game is in limited stock, or there's a special version of it, then why not?

But in other cases, why not wait for the game to get cheaper as you await getting a system, y'know?

^ I really agree with this, I don't know if Spirit Camera will become hard to find once I get a 3DS and I would hate myself forever if I had to go get a used copy x_x

I tend to buy them pretty close together but when I'm able to I do like to get my first game a bit before the release of a system. I don't mind having a game without a system much, but a system without a game annoys the crap out of me. Albeit these days the point becomes pretty moot by the backwards compatibility.

Yeah I agree, you want to play the game but you cant because you still don't have the system. Im actually not going to use my cousin's 3DS to play Spirit Camera, I rather wait till I get mine to get the full experience then ruin it sense he might want to play too if it gets his interest x_x

I've done it twice. I bought call of duty black ops before I owned an xbox360, and I still have several brand new N64 games, but still haven't picked up the console yet. It bugs me sometimes that I can't play it, but some of the games are kinda hard to come by (without paying quite a bit on ebay) with the original box.

The only time I've ever got a game before the system was with Super Smash Bros. Melee and Gamecube. And it was kinda nerve racking having the game in my hands unable to play it. I read the manual several times and took the disc out marveling at how a tiny disc will contain such an awesome game, I was like 10 so yeah lol. But yeah it was all worth it once I got the system. Nowadays though it's a little more bearable since you can watch vids of a game on youtube.

Honestly, if you know that you're going to get the system, I don't think it's a bad idea at all. It's a pretty good motivator.

I usually don't follow games a console I don't have because I'll feel the temptation to buy one and a ton more games when I feel like my current games would need their care and support.
But to be honest I always get the home consoles eventually but the handheld ones aren't a necessity (unless it's part of a series I love, eg Kingdom Hearts 3D, the only reason I'm getting a 3DS really, and an excuse to buy a few more games I've seen) so I'm not much dedicated about buying a game of a console I know I can get cheaper later or even know nothing about dissuades me from buying them.

Lets see, I own Ocarina of Time 3D, Coded, 358/2 days, Phoenix wright Ace Attorney and The world ends with you. I've yet to but a 3DS :( I saw all those on sale at different times though. I don't really see it as a problem though becaues I've likely saved money getting them cheap while I have the chance insted of waiting until I had the system and getting them full price

Depends on what kind of person you are. If you're like me, then you would only buy a game without the console if you really wanted it, or wanted the limited edition of the game. Then it'd be pretty horrible, because GODDAMN YOU WANT TO PLAY THAT GAME. Can't imagine people actually getting mad over something like that though.
