Got an interview at Grand Meridian tomorrow. It's a movie theater. @Misty, you work in a movie theater. Got any tips / advice for both the interview and the job itself should I get it? :)
I was never interviewed for my job, I applied and two days later my boss called and asked if I could come in the next day. If you do get the job, though, I guess it depends on what position you're in / what the setup of the theater is -- since we're a small independent theater we don't really have set positions for people, so the most important thing when someone new is starting is for them to keep busy. In the downtime between movies, sweep the lobby, stock the stand, clean the counters, that sort of thing, even if everyone else is just standing around.
Ooooh, good luck and congratulations on the interview! I just suggest being very smiley and welcoming, they are looking for commitment, dedication and an ability to learn and a willingness to do unpleasant jobs (like cleaning loos). Well, this is what I would perceive them to want as it would be what everyone wants but in order to stand out I would focus on first impressions such as professionalism, confidence, friendliness and a unimpeded determination.
The interview went pretty well yesterday, I think. Smiled and laughed a lot with the four people who were interviewing me and it just really felt like a fun environment. When they asked me things like if I took initiative or what makes for a good day's work and the like, I stated looking around for things that need to be done and all that stuff. Thanks for the tips, @Misty and @Ienzo!
Send them a thank you card so when they're reviewing their interviewed applicants, they pull out your application to remind themselves who you were and how well it went. The fresher you are in their minds, the better
I haven't really had to clean anything like that up? I think most people just think I'm not capable because I'm a woman or something. Backwards I know.
You're lucky then. I guess something about popcorn just makes people miss the toilet, but the messes I've seen really have to be intentional...
We just have the one unisex bathroom that's open to the public. And I really wish it wasn't. Because some of our customers will just go in there and...well, make a mess. And I've heard horror stories about dressing rooms being treated as bathrooms. Which is why I don't really like using fitting rooms to try on clothes.
If I remember correctly you work in a supermarket? So having smaller bathroom facilities is normal, since you don't expect customers to spend hours there, eating and drinking. At a theater obviously it's different -- luckily if someone just destroys one stall and it's not terribly busy I can close it off and leave the mess for our cleaners, but something like puke in the theaters has to be cleaned up before the next show. My sister works in retail and she has plenty of horror stories for dressing rooms. Honestly I don't know why people are so disgusting sometimes... if it was some kind of accident, I understand that it's embarrassing, but just tell someone so we can get to it asap.
@Misty, @Ienzo, I did not get the job, but when I asked if there was anything I could have improved on, they said I was fine in that department. They just found people who were better-qualified. So now I know where I'm lacking, and my mom says going to college should help that.
You could try volunteering to build up some work experience. I spent a few afternoons volunteering in a charity shop before I got my first retail job.
