How do supernovae work?

 

As far as I learned, a Supernova is simply an exploding star.

 

Yes i know, but how does that work?

 

...which then becomes brighter than a fucking galaxy and form entire new nebulae.
Supernovas/novae are awesome.

I think they happen after a star has ran out of "fuel". There's some random chemical reaction due to the absence of fuel that makes them explode IIRC.

 

Abridged version; They either implode because they're too damn heavy, or they get too fat from another star and blows itself to shit.
