Away with all those crimes, They married off 14 year old girls to make them have children! I read that book Stolen Innocnce, and this girl was married off to her Cousin....that's just sick.

This guy was the head of the church.

I was just wondering if anybody knew about this, at least something..

Isn't that basically slavery and child abuse? I can't believe it though, 14 year olds. Thats just not right especially the cousin thing.

Yeah, and the men would have multi-wives and have a bunch of children. And then everything was cut from them, When the girls were married off, the girls wouldent know what sex was until they were forced to. But they still had no idea.

Some people run away, but some cant at all.

Where I come from anyone under the age of 18 being with a adult is frowned upon. Not to mention being used soley for sex.

    >.> They were married at 14...and yes, it is young for a girl to have sex in my own view

Plus they had no idea of what was going on, so it was rape.

Oh gosh, this is quite a sad story. It makes me shudder at the thought. The whole thing is just twisted and wrong. I couldn't bare to be in those girls shoes.

Yeah, but didn't they live on a compound? Sure, police could have done some things, but since they're a religion they couldn't do much. Now, what they did was despicable, but the law protected them from being prosecuted. It's like the thing with communion. If you drink wine under age at church, the police can't get you for under age drinking. It's really a shame the system has loopholes like that...

I knew from a news spot when they were having a court case about taking out the children from the compound.

I see...but shouldent they be able to get in? I mean some lives are at stake, Somethings they die for because it's forbidden in the compound.

Freedom of religion protects them from many laws that most American citizens have to abide by.

God this is horrible. How people can exist like this I don't even want to know. Why can't people stop this from happening before it happens? And the guy who founded this should die in prison.

You're really not supposed to drink it; touching your lips with the wine/blood is fine.

Anyway, yes this is absurd, but why are we talking about this now? This hasn't been on the news in months.

This was brought up last year, and I hope that this book you read didn't marginalize all LDS members as being part of this sect of the LDS church. I personally know friends that are 'lost boys/girls' who suffered through this. The reason law inforcement can't act besides the freedom of religion is that few girls or even boys who do get out want to turn their families in even though they know that what is going on is wrong.

From a very early age, FLDS children are basically given the understanding that the prophet, in this case Warren Jeffs, is the undivided leader and his rule is in response to 'god'. They are told that the outside world is corrupt and hethanistic and that their community is the only morale compass and such. (I'm generalizing from what i've barely gleened from friends and I will not, 100% bring up the subject with them.) All these kids know is their family and the community. There is no real interaction with the outside world,(when my friends were in their compound, they were never introduced to electricity, had no idea about global crisies, war, or sports. The Prophet would cut off communication so that he would be the only one with power.

If memory serves, the only reason that the authorities moved in on the FLDS compound in Texas was because one of the lost girls escaped and called the police or something. It ended up being completely false, being a fake call made by a town resident, hence why the families were allowed to return.

It's disgusting for me because i've seen both sides to my own extent and I do not agree with their teachings or culture. Being married to your cousin at the age of 14 when you are 17 or 16 is rape. No questions asked. Do we feel that they are breaking laws, yes however, FLDS members don't see things the way we do so they would say no. It's tricky.

Anyway, I hope that this has informed you all a bit more, and I can't stress the fact that FLDS is a SECT of the LDS (mormon) religion. They have distanced themselves from even wanting to be put in the same context as the extremists, and i'm fairly positive that HBO's Big Love brought about a raised eyebrows for those that have watched it or not.

I also thought that that this FLDS was part of the morman religon, but they did mention about distancing themselfs from a group that was apart of them, which was most likely that. And Big Love is a very conterverisal show in NY, alot of people I hear on the train to and from school talk about it.

Ya, FLDS is like the extremist side of the LDS church and the mormons don't want to have anything to do with them.

In regards to Big Love, i've not seen it save for half of an episode so I can't say / address any of the themes brought up in the show, but from what i've heard, the creators actually did a bit of research when they got this started.
