It depends on who you ask. I have to say this though, the odds of anyone in a high-school relationship seeing it through to marriage is very low (the most optimistic number I've heard is 2% most have it being less than 1/2 a percent). For practical dating I would skip it. In fact I did, freshamn in highschool and still never been on a date. Still many people consider it to be part of the highschool experience. Just know going into it that it is almost garunteed not to last, and those endings are usually not good.

I agree with you on the not so happy endings, and I've seen this happen too, but that's only because the guys back here don't know anything. I, in the other hand, do. (Not bragging, lol.) I think I could get the relationship going for a while, but I wouldn't know how things can turn out in the end... This is a hard choice for me. Sigh, I just need someone to be there for me, and I was thinking about a special someone. Im not sure.

Poor April. Why don't you give it a try. Highschool is stressful and for some people having a girlfriend makes it easier to handle. trust me, a guy in my grade has a girlfriend and I swear he's kinda happier everyday now. It might not work for you and that is true that only about half a percent of highschool relationships make it to marriage or anything close to really serious, but it's nice to experience the first. At least that's my opinion. XD

I've seen them end both ways. The trick seems to be to take things slow and have good communication skills. As long as you recognize the fact that it likely won't end well (maybe not bad either) and don't get reckless with it I think you should be mostly fine.

It wouldn't hurt to have a social life after school. I'd say go for it, the experience will be pleasing and fun. Although you really don't have to rush getting in a relationship, the girls will be there bro, don't worry about them.

I find it odd that you just "decided" to have a girlfriend. How can you decide something like that?

And who said you have to have one when in high school? "Everyone else does" is pretty much the worst argument one can give. Don't force yourself to have a date; you're in no rush, seriously. Go out with a girl once you're sure you have some feelings for her and that you are truly interested. Don't just take the pretty blonde from your English class who you never talk to. That's pretentious.

Although, if you'd like to have a blind date for fun and try your luck, that's fine. It's good to get experience, and as you said in your post, that's what you're pretty much looking for. Just don't screw up your love life with rushed relationships. Take your time. And absolutely do not think that you need to do something because your peers are doing it too. It doesn't make you cooler, but the exact opposite.

( Sorry if that sounded mean, I didn't mean to offend. >: )

I was actually about to say the same thing. Throughout high school I had a handful of girlfriends. None of them whatsoever were serious. I think my total days of being in a relationship (adding the time from all my relationships together) amounts to....a month? And that seems generous. However, two of my "exes" came out to be extremely good friends in the end. Same for a few other girls I tried to date but never got to. In other words, I went out looking for a girlfriend and came out with great friends. It sounds weird, but to me, that's definitely a reason why you should try dating. Hell, maybe you'll get lucky and actually land a serious girlfriend, keep your hopes up.

But my first serious relationship? My freshman year of college. And it was an online relationship (my only to date actually, I'm wary about those things).
But my first serious irl girlfriend, I didn't start dating until two months ago (today is our two month anniversary : D). And I didn't plan it or anything, it just happened. I've been clueless in most situations with what to do because my lack of experience, but it's been great.

What I'm trying to say is, yes, you're in high school and relationships are kind of glorified in those days and taken too seriously without being treated seriously (at least in my experience) and you shouldn't be looking for a girlfriend simply because you are in high school. There's no rush whatsoever.

However, if you just want a quick fling or whatever, go be social. Start talking to girls, etc.

From the fact you say your shy, i'm assuming the relationship you want will be at least a semi-permanent one (meaning a long, caring relationship, but one you're not thinking about marriage and kids).
If that's the case it's just a matter of finding someone with a similar thought. Plenty of people in relationships, just want a relationship, no matter whether it's good or bad, just as long as they have one. That's not the healithies thought to go into a relationship with. You need to be clear with what a relationship should be. If it's a fling, say so, if it's something semi-permanent, say so. Lack of communication is the main reason romantic relationships don't work. We all wonder what our other half is thinking when instead we should just be asking them (then again, women want a man who does things for them without asking, huh, a difficulty...)

I'm in your position, never dated at all and i'm 18. I was fixated with it for a year or so, but I realised that life isn't going to end without having a boyfriend/girlfriend, especially at my age since the relationship is usuaully doomed, considering i'll be going off to Uni next year a long distance relationship isn't likely to be stable. I think that once i've got a job, a permanent residence, and the time i'll start dating. The point i'm getting at is don't pressure yourself into something, instead let it happen by itself.
Then again, this dateless wonder may not be the best guy to give advice on relationships... :P

Personally, I'm a Senior in High School, and I've never had an irl boyfriend, and I've never been on a date.
I think it's because most of the guys at my school are idiots, so I ignore most of them >_>
Anyway, dating in High School isn't right for everyone. Some people can't handle the stress. But if you think you can handle it, then go for it.

Sorry if my post is wrong on saying this, but Im not rushing. I've been taking my time for a long time, actually. It's been something I've been thinking about, dating... I've never dated, and I want to try it out not because Im bored or anything, but to find out more... I can't explain what Im trying to say. It's just something I've been thinking about. Sigh.

I communicate well with others, though sometimes they don't even ****ing pay attention lol. It's sad.
    Thanks for replying.
Hmmm...well, I guess there is some stress behind this. Most people date to make someone jealous, using someone, etc. or to look cool. Im not like that though, and sometimes I wonder if I should ask one of those people what it's like to be dating, but meh. Hope everything works out for you with the idiot guys at your school.

@Bueno - Yeah man, I know exactly what you mean about the "dating with a girl, breaking up, and then later becoming good friends". I guess it wouldn't be bad if something like this happened to me because it didn't work out between the girl and me. And I guess it's a good way to be social, and I want to know what it feels like... Not for a bad reason. Grrr, can't explain it. And dude, sorry for not quoting your post. I mean, I tried to, and I thought I had quoted it, but I didn't. Lol

    Thanks for replying guys.
