For those who don't want to click on it, basically a graduate card that says "Watch your back for ominous black holes, planets." The NAACP is saying that it is discrimating against African Americans because they say it sounds like black whores, "reffering" to every African American woman.

In my opinion, they might've been overreacting slightly. The characters simply sound like that. That doesn't mean they're saying black whores. Hm.

I really don't hear it, to tell the truth. I've listened it over about 5 times but I only hear black wholes, not black whores.
I really think the main reason people hear racial slurs as it were is becasue of the persicussion people believe themselves to be under and hear what they expect to hear, not what is actually said.
When I was bullied I always expected and heard things and insults, even from strangers I never met before but 7/10 times they weren't, it was my own paranoia turning it into what I expect.
Basically, it's not racists, but is still a touchy subject for people.

I seriously hate these kind of groups. All they do is sit around all day looking for the smallest thing to get angry about and claim it to be racism. I can see how they heard whores, but they're idiots for thinking the company was being racist when it was obviously about planets.

Agreed. Like when a whole bunch of people got upset over Resident Evil 5 because you're a white guy blowing the shit outta a bunch of black people in AFRICA? Yeah, people found that racist.

I don't hear "black whores" at all. I can't stand people who nitpick over every little thing they think is racist.

Reminds me of when I used to work in a grocery store and someone's card would decline three times or so, and they'd yell "You're only refusing to serve me because I'm BLACK!"

No...I'm refusing to serve you because you aren't paying me for the $250 of stuff you've brought over. It was funny when someone who wasn't black pulled that race card.

what is this I don't even

but seriously, they're getting riled up about something that isn't there. It's like listening to Stairway to Heaven backwards; there's a good chance that your brain is going to invent something that doesn't exist.

I can see why they are getting riled up, I mean race is a major issue in this country and needs to be fixed. However, this voice card does not sound like what they are claiming it to say. I listened to it over and over, it sounds like "black holes" everytime. I think they are over-reacting, but I understand their point of view on this as well.

This is ridiculous. I want to hear what the entire card says, because I don't really know why space and the solar system are being used in the joke (or why they were calling black holes "ominous"), but the NAACP doesn't have anything substantial to complain about. It's a damn card with pastel-colored animals. It's not going corrupt America's youth; subliminally or otherwise.

MAYBE there's something slightly racial there, associating "black" with "ominous", but it's nothing to get out your picket signs for, because if it's there, it's so subtle that most people wouldn't even think twice about that line. And whether they meant to or not, they pulled that "black whores" thing out of their asses; it definitely doesn't say that. I tried telling myself that it does say that, but when I listen to it, I still hear "holes".

Groups like this are important, because there is still some hate out there, but when they have nothing important to do, they get all fidgety and start inventing racism, sexism, etc. that doesn't exist. When this happens, it really pisses me off, because people have to be SO politically correct that they have to avoid any phrase that could possibly be construed as denoting race, gender, or religion, even if that denotation doesn't make sense in context.

No reason to get upset. If something sounds racist when it's clearly not, then there isn't a problem. It's not Hallmark's fault black holes "sounds" like another phrase. If it offends people I say they should change it to "African American holes" or something similar. <<

    Final verdict: Overreaction

    BUT

companies should take notice to be careful when using the word black or white in certain things. It can cause racially sensitive groups to overreact.

They shouldn't have the right to overreact.

This is why we shouldn't have a more regulated press, all the press seem to exist for is to spead dischord, violence and hatred. The whole BP oil spill thing is especially ridiulous in that respect, but that's another story.

Oh HELL no! People shouldn't have to watch what they say in fear of other people not liking what comes out of our mouths. Whether you're white, or black. There's a line to be drawn on what's respectful, and what's not, yes, but we shouldn't have to be careful about using the words black or white. I mean really. Plus, the controversy was about the word hole anyways. It apparently sounded like whore- you know, whatever! That doesn't even fucken matter. It's their fault for overreacting. Don't turn this on Hallmark. This thread is startin' to piss me off.

Don't you mean "should have a more regulated press"? The way you phrased the sentence seems contradictory.

    I agree.

I mean really, I bet they have a person sitting there watching TV and hearing EVERYTHING waiting to see if it's racist.

Then again I may be wrong.

But really, if you hear it in REALLY bad audio quality, you hear whores. With good audio quality I heard holes. So it just depends.

Y'know, on the one hand, I think this sort of implies that the racism problem is getting a lot better (in certain areas, hi there disclaimer). I mean, you've gotta be pretty short on ideas to be picking at freaking Hallmark cards.

Either way, these people need to lighten up. I didn't even hear the message, and I can hear a lot worse in a lot clearer recordings. It can't be bad enough to demand a formal apology.
