In quite a few places in the US there are scientific phenomenons (spelt wrong?) that can't be explained. Quite a few think that these may be the workings of ghosts, or maybe dead loved ones guiding them through life. While other people, believing more scientificly think that there is a plausible explanation to all these controversies.

The one I would like to bring up is the phenomenon called Gravity Hill. I personally have never attended one but I have a close friend that did it so I trust that this is real.

There are two places that I know of in the state that I live, where 'happenings' have occured portaining to Gravity Hill

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    The Story Of Gravity Hill

On a very cold day at about midnight a woman was driving through a foggy road. She looked up at her rearview window to check on her three kids. One of the children was a teenager and the other 2 were about 10 years old. As she was driving along she came across a large hill. As she was climbing up it her car broke down, she quickly pulled the E-Brake. She turned to her children and said "We can't stay here or we may get hit, we'll have to push it, and we can't push it down for fear it will get going to fast and we'll lose it and it may hit someone."

So the children got out of the car and began to push with the mother stearing it. She got near to the top of the hill where the "Stop" sign was and was about to tell the children to stop pushing. As she turned she saw the oldest boy slip and fall. The weight of the car was too much for the younger children and the car backed up over the three children killing them all. The car began to fall down the hill at a high-rate of speed. Before she could pull the E-Brake again she was hit by an 18-wheeler. The mother died on impact.

Now if you go to 'Gravity Hill' and turn your car off or put it in Neutral, The "Spirits" of the children and mother will push your car up the Hill. And if you put powder on the bumper you can see the handprints.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Scientific Explanation

(this was explained to be a bit blurry so ill give you a general idea)

Apparently there are gravity pockets that are scattered underneath the earths crust. And there are certain hills like this where the 'gravity' has escaped the pocket. Something about the polar differences drags the car up.

(thats probably wrong, but there was an "explanation", more of a theory.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now my close friend has gone and done this, and I completely trust her. She said that the car was pulled or "pushed" up the hill. They didn't have any powder so they couldn't do the bumper thing but I'm sure that they were pulled up. I will be going soon to try it out myself.

So what are your thoughts on the matter?

There are places like this all over the world, even one here in Northern Ireland. It is an optical illusion. It looks like the road is sloping upwards and therefore looks like the car is rolling up the hill. In fact, it is actually rolling downhill.

Apparently it is often caused by an obstructed horizon as this severely inhibits our ability to make judgement on slopes. Also, what we see can override what our inner ear tells us.

Also, I'd like to point out that "science can't explain it now (see: now), so it must be paranormal" constitutes an argument from ignorance.

That is a very sad story ):

With regards to the paranormal aspect though, the feeling like you are being pulled up the hill has been explained by Bunty and its true, there are literally hundreds of places like this across the world.

The power of the human mind is an incredible thing, if you tell enough people something then it becomes true, I am willing to bet that the majority of the people who tell that particular story never did the powder test either, more that they heard from a friend who heard from a cousin who heard it from their sister's boyfriend's aunt.

It isn't ignorance, it is what it is, if something cannot currently be explained by science then yes it is paranormal, paranormal just being something currently unexplainable by science. Nothing ignorant about it. Paranormal doesn't always mean ghosties and things that go bump in the night.

    lolrumors. :D
I've never believed pretty much any rumor I've heard. I always research it.

I would say "extranormal" would be a better word, because of the connotations "paranormal" has - you know, aliens, ghosts, etc.

On an almost-related note, one scientist (I don't remember who) said that a sufficiently advanced science would appear, to the untrained eye, to be magic. Basically, if it's unexplained, that doesn't mean it's unexplainable.

    That story made me cry.
It's probably the scientific explanation though. :'D

Technically speaking, you're correct, but you're more or less adressing a question of semantics than anything else.

Let me ask. Do you know even know what an "argument from ignorance" is?

    In essentials:

Making the assertion that simply because we don't yet have a natural explanation for a phenomenon, it must involve the supernatural (and yes, by that i mean ghosts, ghouls, magic, leprechauns, God and what else have you) is, by definition, an argument from ignorance.

It doesn't necessarily imply the person making the argument is ignorant (which I believe is the idea you got), merely that they're using the lack of knowledge and evidence for one viewpoint to try and prove another, hence, "argument from ignorance.

Under your definition, the phenomenon is technically "paranormal" until science explains it, which is true enough, but again, that's merely a question of semantics and unrelated to the point I was trying to make.

It's like saying that because we don't know what caused the Big Bang, it must be God.

The answer, for the moment, is simply "I don't know".

That is often the best way to be, I could make up any old rumour but that doesn't make it true. Some people say that if you something is told enough times it becomes true and in a way that does make sense, because it becomes true in the minds of people.

Hmm I see your point, except to me to say something is extranormal makes it sound like it is something perfectly explainable. Maybe it is the human interpretation of "paranormal" that needs to change and not the word itself.

    Truth ~

:v in future it might be nice to let me answer before explaining something to me under the assumption that I don't understand you know? Since even though I do know what an argument from ignorance is, even if I said it now then it would look like I was just using your post to make myself appear more intelligent. If I didn't understand something then I would say "I'm sorry I don't understand what you are saying". You don't learn anything if you pretend to know everything and though I know I sound like I am sulking now I do just have to say, don't automatically assume I am an idiot ok? I might not be the brightest spark but I am not unintelligent.

edit: in retrospect maybe I worded my original post wrong, in which my bad, either way, I don't appreciate the implication that I am dumb.

I wasn't implying you were dumb. =/ I just thought you didn't know what the phrase meant.

Next time I'll try to assume less, but don't get the idea that just because I don't think you know something about a specific subject doesn't mean I think you're stupid, because that's not what makes someone unintelligent.

I think I've known you long enough to know you're anything but stupid. I realize I might have come off the wrong way, and well, that wasn't what I wanted, but even so, don't you think you're overreacting just a little bit?

I met someone who did the powder test. They said it happened, BUT They have kidded around with me before yet i still believe them. They said that there were witches that lived in one of the houses, and the pentagram drawn all over the ground nearby. (Satan Symbol)
