What do you guys think about this? Do you think it's good idea, or just another attempt from Google to try and rule the world?

My connection is at 54mbps. Fiber has about 1000mbps. I'm not sure if my own connection is that great but in that "race against Fiber" I got owned. So I don't really see how it's a bad thing. Seems pretty cool.

A 54Mbps connection is within your LAN (I assume you're wireless, that's a usual speed for it). If you actually want to know the speed of your connection, try it here.

Google Fiber sounds like a phenomenal idea to me--Google is definitely sticking their hands in a lot of places but I really don't mind, for some reason? Their TV service sounds pretty good too. First time I've ever wished I lived in Kansas. P:

Yes, I heard about this! This is a solid service and the whole charity aspect is really clever and sweet. The prices are an absolute gem too, especially the packages. Hoping to fiberize my town as soon as it comes over here. And if google rules the world it'll be because they did their very best.

Too bad everything's up to date in Kansas City.

Free internet? Cheap TV/Internt combo? Holy cow, sign me up! This sounds fantastic. THey would totally beat out Comcast and Verizon too, especially since they are both horrible.

    It's not completely free:

It's free after the first year.
And for their other plans with download speeds 100x faster than normal, they are most times unnecessary because servers have a cap in download speed but only torrents can actually come closer to your max dl speed.

    Holy crap.

I cannot even begin to tell you how much I want this.

Right now, we're having huge issues with AT&T, and we're thinking of switching soon to something like Comcast or whatever. I don't know what internet speeds we were promised in theory, but in my experience, the highest download speed I had ever achieve is around 300 kilobytes/second (with torrents). We have a limit of 150 gb/month, and if we go over, they charge us extra. Last month, we hit 360 gb. That was a fun bill. But most irritating of all is that the internet keeps just dropping randomly right when I'm in the middle of doing something.

And in walks Google Fiber. Holy crap, do I want this. I hope it spreads to my area soon, because once it does, I will get every single person I know to beg Google for it.

Honestly? At this point, I don't care if Google rules the world.

This is what I'm afraid the industry may start moving towards, because it's very lucrative. Bad news for my household though, since all of the TVs use Netflix or Hulu for television and nothing else. 8( I think Google definitely has prepared a solid model that is current with the market, unlike some of the more popular ISPs.

The Free plan is interesting too, even though it requires the $300 installation fee--dunno about you guys but my monthly Verizon bill is $400 (though that includes TV, Internet, and cellphone service for four people). Speeds aren't great but it's free lol.

(also that problem sounds like an issue with your networking equipment and not the ISP)

Well then the ISP gives out faulty equipment, because we had the same issues at my old house, and when we moved, they gave us a "brand new" router. Unfortunately, this is one of those companies where you have to use their equipment, you can't just go buy your own, and they charge a fee if you ask to get it replaced.

I'm actually a little surprised that they (Google) started in Kansas City rather than, say, Silicon Valley.

Hm, it could be your computer's NIC, though if it's happening to all the computers in the household then it is the ISP's fault.

I think a few cities were up for the trial Google Fiber but Kansas won out in the end. I don't believe they ever gave specific reasons as to why, though the low population might have been a contributing factor--relatively small scale to begin on.
