So today my nieces have informed me that they've never played a video game (except for a small amount of Minecraft).

I want to change this, but unfortunately I didn't at the moment have anything age appropriate on my computer.

I need suggestions on games I should have them try.
They're 7 and 5, and they like princesses and barbies and stuff. Nothing too wordy, or at least maybe something with voice acting, as the younger one can't read much yet.

They don't own any game consoles themselves, but they both have Nexus tablets. So apps and PC games or emulator stuff is preferable.

Mario or Sonic on emulators I guess would be a solid start? :C

I was going to recommend the Nancy Drew series, which are just point and click adventure games that involve puzzle solving. Though some of the games can get rather spooky so I'm not sure if that would be appropriate. Not all of them involve ghosts though. The games have voice acting which can be rather comical sometimes.

I know my 5 year old Niece likes playing Fruit Ninja and Angry Birds on my sister's tablet.

But seriously, just about anything from the "old school" era would be great to show them. Dat minimalism. Er...never mind. Those kinds of games are probably too hard for kids.

There's loads of indie games for free you can find if you do a little searching. For some reason I can't think of any off the top of my head.

I'm half-inclined to agree but also a lot of people grew up with them and got through 'em hah. Kind of a tough call! I think it would have been cool to have grown up with those but I missed out :'c

In terms of younger relatives I have a lot who seem to like DS games. Pokemon comes to mind.

Putting console stuff aside (I liked Sly Cooper as a kid), I used to play a lot of PC remakes of old arcade games. Frogger, Breakout, that sort of thing. These were generally less-than-stellar early 3D releases, and Frogger 3D in particular was HARD, but I have a lot of nostalgia for them.

Also some of them had really excellent music.

I grew up playing some really hardcore games (unfortunately not the original Battletoads) but that's something you just have to be exposed to first, I feel. Unless the kid's a natural.

Screw it. Let them play Battletoads. Bathe in their tears.

Soooo anything Zelda? It's about a princess being taken by a mythical pig because she has some all powerful magic inside of her and a brave dude steps up to come save her.

What else? Yeah, what else, let's try to not be so obvio- Got it.

Actual recommendations: Co-op Chip N Dale: Rescue Rangers for NES, co-cop some Bubble Bobble, and ANYTHING KIRBY (Kirby's Adventure and Kirby Super Star are both good)

My first game was Bomberman II for the NES. The interaction is simple (press A to place bomb, move before bomb goes off) and the pay off (BOOOOOOOOM) is great. Could also work

Wait for the super-feminists to come in and tell you that the game is sexist because it's about a weak female that needs saving from a male and will teach girls to be submissive. Also, it will teach them to worship chickens because they're OP.

    ilu feminists of KHV

Maybe the Cooking Mama games? Tetris? Scribblenauts? Pet simulators of some sort? I know there's a whole slew of Barbie PC games (I have sisters, okay?). Disney had some PC games—the Interactive Storybooks, I think they were called; I had loads of fun with those when I was younger.

Actually, it's empowering to trans-gender identifiers. Think about it: A black cis-male (whose oppressive power complex reveals him to be a trans-ethnic white cis-male) plans to kidnap a stereotypical female who must be rescued by a male with a penchant for music and nature, implying that xe is a trans-woman. When the male hero fails, the kidnapped female finds a way to escape on xir own and takes on a masculine identity, revealing xir closeted trans-man identity. The trans-man helps the trans-woman on xir journey and in the end they both defeat the oppressive trans-white cis-male king.

I'd definitely rec some classic Nintendo stuff: Mario and Kirby especially with the emulator. I'd also wholeheartedly rec some point and click adventure games (of which there should be plenty on the Android market) and puzzle games (of course Tetris, but maybe Bejeweled, Peggle, Plants vs Zombies, etc.).

Take baby steps and eventually they'll graduate to KH or Pokémon.

See, old games work because simplicity is key, especially at young ages. They'll get the full experience of what a game is without the cutscenes and stuff.

    Let's not.....

Right now Sonic has been the big winner with my 5.5 year old niece. Doesn't matter what game I put on, she loves it. It helps that most of the games are pretty simple to control. Something a lot of people tend to forget is that little kids tend to have little hands, so pressing a bunch of different buttons can be hard for them
If they liked princesses and stuff, I'm going to assume they like Disney princesses, so if you want to literally waste all of the money you'll ever have, you could invest in Disney Infinity

Why not try the Humongous Entertainment adventure games? They're kid friendly and they are quite fun.
...and not to mention most of them are on steam and are on sale for the next 12 hours. ;D

    Tetris is a timeless classic.
So much yes to this! I think I wasted so many hours on games like Freddi Fish, Putt-Putt, and Pajama Sam when I was a kid (then again, they were educational, so my time wasn't completely wasteful XP)

Disney Princess Enchanted Journey is really a lot of fun, that's what I introduced my cousin's (5ish, and 8ish) to before Kingdom Hearts, since the plot was ruffly similar. I have it on an emulator, but it is also for PC.
