Like books about Harry Potter, for instance. They annoy me. I mean, taking the story and characters of someone who has made them lovingly, over years of effort, and then earning money with it without genuinely creating something new. How corrupt is that? Anyway, what's your opinion of the matter?

The problem I have with situations like that is people read the book solely for the sake that it is THE BOOK. Check out Twilight, now when ever I go to Barnes and Noble I see this giant table filled with Twilight bags, book marks(Did you know there is a Twilight Barbie?!?!) I mean Twilight came out in 2005 it was a New York Times Best Seller but it wasn't the IT book. Now ever since the movie it's EDWARD CULLEN IS MY BOYFRIEND!!!!! I mean seriously? It is all hype. Half of those girls either haven't read the books, or are just playing along. So yeah it sucks when that happens. I read Twilight thought it was OK, saw the movie: thought it sucked. And couldn't continue the series half-way through the second book. *Sigh* There is my little rant against the Twilight franchise. It is very sad how big something can get over solely hype, the only Twilight fans I respect are the one that read the book BEFORE the movie came out, not vice-versa. :ninja:

I hate how some books get annoyingly over popular. Twilight? No one read it back in 2005 and now everyone is drooling over Edward Cullen and Jacob Black claiming that they will marry one of them. Harry Potter? The only reason I haven't read the books is because I didn't like how EVERYONE read them and went crazy over them. I just couldn't bring myself to read something that people are overly obsessed with (like thinking they will marry Harry, oh please...). I don't see why movies can't be original anymore. I'm fed up with them murdering the books because the book dives so deep into a world of imagination and wonder that they can't create it on screen. Some books should not be attempted yet they are. One book that I heard was being made into a movie is The Hunger Games. I swear, this will never end because it seems like the directors think that if it's a good book then it will be an even better movie. Sadly I do not agree, the books are ALWAYS (in all of the books into movies that I've seen) better than the movie.

I agree with both of you, but I don't think that's what she means.

I thought she meant the books that aren't written by the author about the book, such as the Harry Potter prediction books and such.

They don't actually bother me, it makes me proud that Harry Potter has such a great fanbase that cares so much about what will happen that people will write/buy books ABOUT the series, and not just THE series.

I would agree with the books are always better than movies argument but there is one exception: the Godfather. Amazing films, crap book.

Aside from that though, I totally agree.

But, about books about books, no I wouldn't say it was a bad thing. It's another skill to be able to writ a book about the sucess of another book than to write a new story. In addition, I have an aquantance who has written a book about the Harry Potter fandom which is really well written amoungst other things. Did she cheat out JK Rowling? No, she was merely writing a book about her experiances in the fandom leading up to the release of The Deathly Hallows. Anyway, I think that it is a different thing to be able to write about real events and ficticous ones and if you want to write a book concerning the work of an author or a film or book, how much more different is it to writing a biography and those sell really well.

I think it'd be different if your acquaintance didn't get permission from Rowling and published the book..

But I think the original poster meant books like the one Harry Potter book about Quidditch, or the magical creatures and where to find them book.

Books that are from the same universe the original author created, but aren't written by the original author.

I personally read the Quidditch book enjoyed it. If they had the original author's permission, and actually let them influence it so it doesn't ruin the integrity of the original stories, that's alright.

You'd be mistaken then, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and Quidditch through the ages were written by JK Rowling! She wrote them for three reasons: 1. To raise money for Comic Releif here in the UK, 2. To try experementing with writing in a different style, and 3. To give the fans some supplimentary information. THey are written in a vastly different way to the Harry Potter books so you'd be forgiven for thinking that they weren't written by her but they were.

Ah that's what I had thought, but figured they were what the OP was referring to and it's been so long since I read them.

But the rest of my point still stands.

Well, seeing as the Quidditch Book And The Beasts Book were written by JK Rowling, what other books do you know of that are in the world of the series but not written by the author?
