No Thanks Former Staff Sub-Forum

Would it be possible to add a Former Staff sub-forum to Staff?

I'm only suggesting this because the current way seems a little confusing -- perhaps not to us senior members, but for new members, most likely, because the Staff forum implies that all of those people are on staff, which isn't true.

Thoughts?

 

Everyone with a thread in the staff bio section is currently a staff member; when someone leaves the staff, their thread is deleted.

 

Yeah, I had it in my head that I saw them there for some reason, but I had pointed Stardust to this thread on Windows Live Messenger, and she said the same thing -- you soft-delete their threads.

In that case, I'll change my original suggestion, since I still think it could nice / useful.

Create a Former Staff sub-forum in Staff, restore the previously deleted ex-staff members' bio threads, and move them to the new sub-forum. This way, older members could go through the bio threads for nostalgia, and for users that joined after those members retired, they could go in there and see previous staff members we've had.

Thoughts on this?

 

Well, number one, we don't have all the previous staff's threads in the first place (if they ever made one), simply because some people liked to permanently remove posts. Secondly, not all of our past staff members left us on good terms, so leaving their bio up would be a little... uncomfortable. The staff bio section is intended to allow you to get to know the staff members you will likely encounter and to make contacting them easier. Once someone leaves the staff, they're just the same as any other member. Yes they put time into the site and we're grateful for that, but we don't need to build them a shrine.

Plus I've counted and we have had almost 70 staff members, in the past. Very few of them actually have bios on here but all the same.

 

You raise a very good point, and now that I think about it more, I agree.

You actually did hit the nail on the head there. This suggestion was mostly coming from, for the ones that left on good terms, not letting their hard work just disappear, as I like to appreciate any kind staff (current or former) on any forum, such as you, Mark, and everyone else, and I'm sure you guys do, too, but as you said, creating a separate forum or sub-forum for them would be kind of like worshiping a favorite object you no longer have, I guess? Additionally, like you said again, some left on bad terms.

 

I kind of liked the idea of having a subsection for former staff, for those who did make a thread anyway. I understand it'd be "uncomfortable," but would that really be a big deal? The way I see it, it's kind of like having a little piece of KHV history (and not all history is good). It's not like we're putting the reason why they left, it's simply just the thread they made when becoming staff. If we have one for a former staffie, awesome. If not, oh well. And then we can start doing it seriously now.

 

I do like this idea, if only to preserve a bit of the history of the site.

 

This isn't gonna be a thing. First because the intended purpose of the staff section was to show you the current active staff and learn about them because sooner or later you'd probably have to go to any of them for something. Not to preserve history.

There's a timeline thread in Discussion for the sake of history. We now have a staff page and the staff section will be removed to make the forum smaller, so this goes null and void anyhow.
