Found The Gimp on my computer. Figured I'd try my hand at graphics.
So I made a popout sig (thanks to a tutorial from Misty for the text, and GimpTalk's tutorials).
I doubt many people hear have ever heard of s-CRY-ed, but yeah, lead character right there.
Had a lot of trouble due to the layers dialogue missing.
Thanks to Split for helping me with that.
Like I said. My first attempt with graphics EVER so be slightly gentle with the CnC.
    Anyways, without further adeiu:

    CnC and all that jazz?
EDIT: Now that I think about it, I probably should have altered (ha pun) the render itself...
oh well. I'll remember that next time

The background is fugly, and the text is unappealing. Also, it looks like you didn't do much of anything to the render itself, which doesn't blend with the background at all.

I recommend following some more tuts. It might take some time, but I'm betting you'll improve.

Eh, I'm not a huge fan of pop out sigs but you did a nice job especially since it's your first sig and all. Well I suppose I'll give some cnc~

I would suggest trying to adjust the hue & saturation of the render to make "pop" more and just mess with the colors. Also, try blending the render itself into the background with the smudge tool. The background color doesn't really go with the render itself and I just think the color you used is sort of ugly. To make the text better, maybe you should make it a tad smaller and take that Gaussian blur off of your text (I'm assuming you used Gaussian blur to make that "glow" effect on your text cause that's how I do it :>) The black border is alright looking and well...I don't know what else to say.

Just keep reading some tuts and you'll get better along the road. c:

I was actually quite satisfied with the background, except for that lighter shade in the middle. It was meant to be a slightly lighter gold because that was the color that represented him in the anime, that and a darkish red. And it was meant to look kind of like a cracked boulder, not sure if that came out right.

Yeah, the Gaussian Blur was what I used. I duplicated the text, did some stuff on each layer and placed it over each other. I admit it doesn't really go along with the rest of the tag, but I was just amazed at the glowing effect, I kept it lol
As for the render, I'm still not experienced in editing the render itself...
I kept messing up the smudging, but I do see what you guys mean. The tut I was using didn't do anything to the render so I just kept it as is; guess it's not the best idea, huh?
    Thanks for the cnc.

    Keep them coming.

Beezy basically said it all, but I'd like to add that this is quite good for your first sig. :3 Of course read some tuts, I can direct to good GIMP sites and help you out myself. I haven't used Gimp in a while but I still know the basics.

Thanks, Misty. I've actually been looking through some of the tutorials you made, along with others. I'm still having trouble making effects, but I'm getting the hang of the basics. I'm remaking this sig from scratch, once I get a few other renders worked out.

I'm still having trouble with text mostly such as how to make it work with the background.
    Any tips?

Back when I was still learning and all I would sometimes make a new layer, copy visible, paste, then Gaussian Blur it all by a high amount. Then I would add my text layer, hide it, and alpha to select it (right click on the layer and choose Alpha to Selection). After that I would click on the blurred layer, invert the selection, and hit delete. It might not always have the best effect but I used to do it a lot.
