This has never happened to me. I've switched to firefox when I got my laptop a couple weeks ago and have had no problems with it. Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling it?
It may just need an update and be conflicting with something else on your computer, though I don't know if that could happen.
Did you download an add-on before this happened?

They just had 3.5.4 released not too long ago (a week-ish, maybe?). Have it search for updates.

Also check and see that your comp's firewall isn't trying to block Firefox for some reason. I fixed a friend's comp that was doing that. Why it was blocked I'll never know. I had to go into the firewall options and allow FF.

Allow a program through the firewall? Simple. I'm going to assume you're using Windows, and going to assume further that it's XP (I think it's the same idea in Vista, not sure.)

Go to Start, click Control Panel.
    Click on Windows Firewall.
Click on the Exception Tab when the window pops up.
There will be a list of programs that Windows is allowing to pass through the Firewall. Check and see that Firefox is there and has a checked box, this means that it is being allowed through. If it's not there, click the Add Program button and choose Firefox from the list of progams that shows up. Click Ok.

If that doesn't work let me know and I'll think of something else.
