I highly suggest you read the visual novel
The anime trys to jampack 3 different routes into one 24 episode series and it simply does not work.
For example there is a character who in one route dies the first time you meet her however in another route she has a backstory that is completely fleshed out. Unfortunately the anime does not know what to do so things get really hectic and it seems like a billion different things are all happening at once and the show expects you to keep up with it all. Not to mention stock animation everywhere.
You can download the VN anywhere nowadays or just find it on Youtube.

Fate/Zero is a lot more accessible. It's a prequel to Stay night so you may not enjoy it as much as if you knew the story behind Stay night but it's still a very good show and so far my personal anime of 2012 so far.

This ***** knows what he's talking about.

Plus the anime went primarily with the Fate route which isn't a bad route but UBW and Heaven's Feel are better in my opinion and don't have the protagonist being an idiot the whole way through.

I watched it. When I first saw it, I loved it. But then for these reasons:

I just liked it now. It isn't bad. But it really trims out a bunch of stuff that made the visual novel so great.

umm, what do you guys mean "route"? Does the story have three different books? Or something else?

I would actually advise watching the anime but suggest reading the Visual novel right after

The anime itself isn't quite bad but the Visual Novel is leagues better

The anime does a good job following the fate path but there still is a bunch omitted and the caster arc was pretty poor attempt at them fusing the routes.

Overall I like the anime and it was what got me into the Nasuverse

In the visual novel you are given choices upon what to do next. If you choose certain choices the story changes

    There are three alternate stories

    Fate
    Unlimited Blade Works
    Heaven's Feel

A visual novel is more like a cross between a book and a video game and a visual novel has routes or paths as they are sometimes refered to. FSN has three routes - Fate (which is what the anime is mostly based on), Unlimted Blade Works (which has a movie but that's another conversation for another time), and Heaven's Feel (which is the darkest of the three). A "route" is basicly a differnt telling of the same story, with differnt outcomes, endings, sometimes character development, etc.

I have a little pet peeve with reading things on youtube. The people sometimes go way to fast, so I never read on there if I can avoid it. Guess I'll find someplace to download it

They use a patch to translate it. As for where you can download it well you're going to have to get someone else to help you there.
