Okay first off, I'm not really sure if this is the right section for this considering what I'm trying to make the topic of this thread about, because I guess it's not really a topic that's "intelligent", but more informal. I couldn't decide on what section to post it in: debate, spam zone, general discussion, and so on. So anyway, I might as well just start the thread, despite of what section it belongs in.

Okay, I have to honestly admit that I have been called emo before (I still am now by some people), but in real life, not on the internet. I have been called emo because of my appearance, and sort of how I act. In my (middle)school, we have a uniform; it consist of: White collar shirt, Navy collar shirt (I think), school t-shirt (Blue or Grey), Navy pants/shorts (cannot have too baggy), or khaki pants/shorts, and you have to wear a belt with shirt tucked in. On Fridays you can wear jeans, and I wear my black jeans, or my tight REALLY dark blue jeans. I listen to Screamo, which is apparently the same thing as emo to ignorant people (which is what this topic is about, but I’ll bring that back up later). Also, the fact that I have long hair and I always have my bangs covering my face doesn’t really help my appearance as “emoâ€, but get this: I have long, beautiful blonde hair (as described by tons of girls in my school), and even though I have thoughts about dying my hair black, I don’t want to do that until my hair turns brown (which happens most of the time if your hair is blonde, and from brown it turns white, if you live that long…), so I can keep my “beautiful†long blonde hair, well beautiful. So anyway, I’m trying to say is that I dress more like someone hard-core would dress, other than an “emo†kid would dress. I don’t wear a belt, and I would never wear a studded belt, because I honestly think that they look gay, unless a guy in a band is wearing one. I have never cut myself, but I have thought of suicide (but can anyone honestly say they haven’t?). Now that I have explained that I don’t dress like an “emo†person would dress, I must explain how I act. I’m an out-going kind of guy, but only with my friends, though I’m not that out-going when it comes to girls (obviously I’m not that confident about being around girls that aren’t my friends). Whenever I’m depressed, I don’t hide it from the world, nor from my friends, so I’m pretty much quiet all the time when I’m depressed. I’m funny (not trying to brag), and when I’m hyper everyone around me (that’s my friend) has a great time, I have a lot of friends, but I don’t really hang out with them because at recess they are playing football or basketball (which I’m not totally confident about playing since I can’t catch worth ****, but I can run fast as hell), so I want to know, why would anyone call me “emoâ€? I mean, I usually dress in all black, but should I be judged for wearing black? Then again, I might be over-reacting, because usually my friends call me “emo†but they are joking around, but sometimes I’m called “emo†not by my friends, when I’m being made fun of. So in reality, I’m the totally opposite of what would be described as “emo†in terms of how I act, and I barley dress like how you would think an “emo†person would dress as, aside from my wardrobe being almost completely black.

Now I want to explain what “emo†is. “Emoâ€, apparently, is described as someone who wears eye-shadow, dresses in all black, has black hair, and dresses in all black. Emo is really a music genre that started in the 80s-90s. There were bands who’s lyrics seemed like they really came from the heart, or described depression, and so the fans made up a genre to describe them as, which we all know as emo, short for emotional. Now pussies who cut themselves, and talk about how depressed they are (yet they have so many friends), call themselves emo. So now people think that emo is a style, even though it is really a music genre, and label people who are depressed and wear black clothes all the time as emo. What really pisses me off is that some kids that are labeled as emo, actually call themselves emo. It doesn’t make sense to me, you wouldn’t call yourself rock just because you are rich and in a famous band, would you? There are scene kids (who should be described as emo if you would call anyone emo), and gothic people aren’t anything like scene kids. So really, what kind of ****** would either call themselves a music genre, or call somebody else a music genre? Also, Screamo isn’t anything like Emo music. Emo music is usually lyrics about how the person’s life sucks, and how they can’t go on, while Screamo is usually about things that other people would care about, and some Screamo bands make you feel better (like blessthefall, whenever I listen to them it always makes me happy), and tons of Screamo bands are actually Christian, so they are giving out a positive message, while Emo music is giving out a negative message that makes you want to kill yourself. I also hate it when people call Screamo crap because they can’t understand what they are singing when they scream, I mean really, it takes a long time to be able to scream, and the band members are AMAZING at their instruments…the bass players shake your car if you listen to the music at like volume 8, the drummers play the double-bass drums which take a lot of practice to be good at, and the guitars are phenomenal, and they singers have the best voices when they sing normally, and the lyrics are meaningful. While emo music sucks, and the lyrics are horrible, because they are normally all about depression and how much the people hurt inside.

Well, that’s pretty much all I have to say about emo, and how I’m totally NOT emo.

I hate it when people call you things just because how you dress. They used to call me Emo in Middle school because I wore lots of black. It was beyond irritating. Now people call be a prep because I don't wear a lot of black anymore and I have blonde hair. Wtf?

Well first let say that everything you have said about EMO(in reference to the style/stereo-type) is completely wrong.

While it is true that it started as a music genre, it has evolved from that. EMO music is not always depressing and makes people suicidal. It's deep emotional lyrics with some hella good music to it.

EMO kids are not all depressed and cut themselves. I speak as a true EMO kid. an EMO kid is really someone who is deeply emotional. a person who is that emotional can never really understand all of it, that's why we're labeled as depressed. Not all EMO kids have black hair, most actually have very colorful hair. the same goes with clothing. most EMO kids i know don't cut themselves either. half of them are actually hemophobic(afraid of blood).

I really can't stand when people are so ignorant that they make such narrow minded judgments about people they don't understand.

I hate vampire kids too and how like they pretend to be goth but all they do is not smoke and drink Mot's Clamato. They don't know what it means to be a real non-conformist. Like you have to drink coffee and stay up until 3 am, while dancing to your favourite song that brings that dark sinister passion to your soul. Vamp kids don't get that ****. They like name themselves Sanguine and claim to feed off of the life force of others, and they're stupid ****ing fad gets me grouped with them. But I'm a ****ing goth, and all those vamp kids are preppy wannabes that think they can be cool by dressing like me and my other goth friends. I also hate being called emo because I wear black and listen to emotional music. I think that the way emo is being generalized is so ****ing rough and insensitive. I wish people took the time to understand the difference instead of just going off an generalizing everybody. Stupid ****ing conformists. just because I act a certain way doesn't mean that they should make fun of me and automatically assume that I'm something I'm not. You know what else bugs me? When people actually care about what others think of them. I do the things I want to because I want to do them, and to me it's cool. I hate when others criticize me for what I believe in. I like to be myself, but then again it also matters what everyone else things about me. Dear god this is such a ****ing contradiction. I think I'll blog about this later or yell at a wall while I write an aimless point of view on a forum about video games. Yeah that should do it. I should tell people what they obviously all think and then get them to agree with me, because that makes me feel better. God damn, htere I am contradicting myself again. I try so hard to be myself and ***** and moan about being an individual and then here I go caring what others think of me and getting other people on this video game forum to agree and reassure me that my individuality is alright. But I already know that right? I mean, I should if I coose to dress the way that I do right? God damn there I go again! Contradiction after contradiction. I'm not emo but I dress like people who are. Wait a minute... if I'm being generalized because of the similarity of my clothing to that of emos, then is my style even my own? Wait a minute! I'm a non-conformist but I dress like a whole bunch of non-conformists? Maybe I should stop wearing black? God damn! If I do, then I'll just be like everyone else. But wait, being like everybody else isn't wrong... IT'S NORMAL. There are generalizations about everything in this world because they provide an easier way to associate and understand the world around us. But if generalizations are okay what about being my own individual? I still am unique because I wear black. Oh **** I did it again. Those imposters also wear black so how am I ever going to escape being compared to all of them. Oh my god why should I even care?????

It's true that Emo started out as a music genre, but now that it's been around for a while, a stereotype has surfaced around the people who listen to it: people with black hair, tight black clothes, and make up who are constantly depressed and cut themselves. Generally, the people who call themselves "Emo" do not actually fit the most important aspects of this definition: the last two. Anyone can look the part, but only a small percent actually "qualify" on an emotional level. Unfortunately, since you like wearing black clothes and tight pants, you are going to be shoved into the Emo stereotype. I also dress in black, so I get similar comments, but honestly, you'll just have to suck it up. Whether you like it or not, people always judge others from the outside, and until technology finds a way to instantly beam your personality into other people's minds, then you will continue to be judged from your appearance. You can't expect everyone to know your life story, so just ignore the negative comments.

It's also not fair to call people ignorant because they think Emo and Screamo are the same thing. Screamo is a branch of Emo, and although they do it in different ways, they both criticize things in life, society, etc. There is a difference between a generalization and a judgment. A generalization would be referring to someone who is Korean as an Asian, because you don't know their exact culture, while calling all Asians "Chinese" is a judgment, because you are assuming their culture before you actually know. True, Emo and Screamo aren't the same thing, but they are very similar on a thematic level, even if you don't agree. My point is, you call someone ignorant for calling all Asians "Chinese" because they make a physical judgment, but ignorant is a strong word to use for someone who refers to Screamo as "Emo," because they involve similar concepts.

Now I'd like to point out some assumptions you made in your post that I didn't care for:

Calling someone a "pussy" because they cut themselves and suffer from depression is nothing short of insensitive. Plus, you are also assuming that they have a lot of friends.

You suggest that all Christians are automatically good, and that Emo music condones suicide. I'd like to make it clear that I don't like Emo music, or Screamo for that matter, but both Emo and Screamo are genres created to relieve stress, and give the listener a feeling of comfort. Also, there are plenty of Christian messages that have been contorted into something extremely negative. I've seen a lot of fear-mongering from churches, which replaces hope with the fear of going to hell. I'm not bashing Christianity, but no one should ever be written off as having better morals than others, based on their religion.

Overall, even though it's annoying when people judge, you can't do anything about it, so it's best to just ignore it.

I hate the fact that people blow this subject so out of proportions:

First off, emo is or should I say used to be a music genre, and emos were people who listened to it.
Second, why do everybody else care if someone's 'emo', it's their lives, let them do whatever the heck they want with them.
Third, attention whoring emos is just like attention whoring bimbos, they're all whoring for attention. Simply ignore them.
Now I would say I'm a rather casual person and I wouldn't label myself into any cathegory, so when I'm walking down the street it doesn't matter if I see a bimbo or an emo, I don't jump up and down and point at them even though. It's all just a matter of how you chose to define yourself, do it your way and everybody else should mind themselves.

Well, the reason I was hating on the style emo so much was because I was just pissed off at being called that, so automatically I would be pissed off at the term. And cutting yourself is a cowardly thing to do, just because you're sad, doesn't mean you have to fu*k up your body, wouldn't it just make you more depressed? I would also like to apologize about me hating on the music genre, I was talking about the modern emo music, and because the influence that Carlos Mencia has on me, he said he hated emo music, thus I don't like it either, because I like to be like my heroes. And what I said about Christian Screamo, I've never heard Christian music being negative, so that's why I see all Christian music as "good" and because I'm Christian, also because of what I said earlier, I like to be like my heroes, and the members in the Christian Screamo bands that I love are my heroes, so that's why. I know that Screamo branched off from Emo, but I don't really see much similarities between the two, other than the deep meanings behind the lyrics, that people who automatically assume that Screamo music sucks cannot understand. All the Emo music I have heard is depressing, so I wouldn't know about the whole healing thing with Emo music, because I don't really consider depression as healing music, but I've heard Emo bands that lyrics are all about suffering and sh*t. I honestly have to admit, I really don't care about this whole discussion, because I'm not emo, so I don't know what being emo is like, thus I don't really care about emo sh*t.

Oh yeah, Scene kids aren't emo posers, they dress like emo kids, that doesn't mean that they want to be like them. And emo people are Gothic posers.

Wow. Welcome to the emo genteration where it is now not just a music genre but a fad. Whats the most irritating about this freaky Emo fad is that they have turned Bisexuality into a trend and not a lifestyle. i'm sick of the Emo guys making out with each other just becasue they think that it makes them cool.... it doesnt.

The only reason people feel so insulted about being called 'emo' is because they've got this stereotype of kids with black hair covering their eyes and tight jeans on stuck in their head. It's just a word for someone who's emotional. Get it? Emo? Emotional. It had nothing to do with appearance until all the stupid sterotyping kids got images in their heads.

Every teenager -- hell, every peron -- can be considered 'emo' at least one point in their life, and in the true meaning of the word, not in the sense that they walk around listening to Underoath or whatever. People are going to call you what they call you, and there's no way you can control it. The only thing that you can do is ignore it, because obviously they're just ignorant beings who generalize the human race.

People call me emo because I dyed my hair, like skulls and black, and listen to a lot of depressing music. I just want to be left alone, but they all think I'm a freakin whore and attention seeker. Emo is just a music genre, but no one seems to know that anymore. And no, my hair does not go in my eyes...often.

    The term "Emo"
    Oh dearie.
Seems to be popular to use it these days, mostly nowadays(At least in my school) it's used to crudely make fun of somebody who self-harms. I would know, I used to get called it, a hell of a much, and heck, I still do at those occasional moments. I never let it get to me though. I'm not ignorant enough to follow an overrated stereotype, so I don't try. I mainly get called it because of my extreme liking of Metal and Rock music, and yeah, like most "Emos", I listen to screamo and post-hardcore, with example bands being my chemical romance and 30 seconds to mars. Plus I have a long fringe that covers my eyes. So eh.

The thing I find humorous however, is how arrogant people in schools are. I know somebody who actually wants to be emo, I'm being completely serious. He says that he wants to grow his hair like mine, and suddenly starts listening to MCR like mad, and sitting in the dark writing depressing poetry. When I was informed of this by my friend, I found it absolutely hilarious. No. Really. Imagine "ROFL-ing" in the middle of the locker rooms.

Stereotypes are a complete joke(excluding chavs, which is MORE than fitting for a guy who speaks incomprehensible English and wears the most scruffy clothes imaginable) so just ignore it. Soon, nobody'll care, because I'm sure "Emo" will become their own little fashion statement.

@Dexnail - Excuse the back-seat-mod-ness, but did you have to quote the entire post? Damn.
