i really don't know who it should be up to. but i guess i would lean towards the state because they might be able to judge the best age people are allowed a driver's license. i might think that way because perhaps they know better how many accidents occur and the driving nature of that state (because from i heard some drivers in certain states can be aggressive as hell). and make a more educated decision.

I say state myself, simply because drivers are different in each state, and driving laws may be different in some states.

I know in my state the age is 16 1/2 for a license, but they've upped everything you have to do just to get a license now. More hours in driver's ed., more hours behind the wheel with parents, and now even your parents have to go to driving school.

I too agree with the state choosing the age limit.. They're the ones who actually see what goes on on their highways. The government would probably careless anyhow.

I say state too but they should make you do two years so that way the more experince you have the less accidents. i got my liscense this year and had only one year of driving. But My dad makes me practice everyday so i can get the drving tricks to sink in. My best friend(a guy) got his in december and he's been in 2 accidents. One was because a drunk drvier and two was someone who got too close to him while they were trying to get over.

I think all laws in general should be nationwide as opposed to certain laws only applying to certain areas. It'd make things far simpler.

Hmm... It's not really an issue over here since we're one country and one state all the same in England (okay, we have counties, but they're not really the same as states). Certain areas might need certain laws because of extenuating circumstances, but driving age really isn't one of those things.

So, it should be up to the national government, I'd guess.

But that'd make the central government extremely powerful and it'd take a lot of power away from the state legislatures. The framers of the Constitution set up everything for a reason; states have the power to make laws so the government is more balanced and less centralized, since the Founding Fathers feared having another "tyrannical" ruler (though I don't agree that the British were tyrants to the Colonists at all).

I think it depends on the law, honestly. There's no black and white way to say what should be state and what should be national, but there are some laws where it makes sense to be state or national. Highway laws should be national due to the interstate highway system, sales tax laws should be state because different states have different means of revenue and different budgets to meet. It comes down to a matter of individual cases, really. So in the case of driving age, I think it should be national since it doesn't affect the states too much and it'd just make things easier. It's not exactly a step towards tyranny to give the national government the power to regulate the driving age.

I think the state should have its own driving age requirement, but only for that state/area. Kids who grow up in rural areas are usually able to drive before urban kids.
