Stupid police. Why couldn't they just, oh, I don't know, tranquilize it? That dog did not deserve to have its life taken.

Warning! The shooting is toward the end, but the video is graphic and may be disturbing to those easily disturbed.

I couldn't watch the whole thing.
A man was filming the police and when they arrested the guy for doing so, his dog, trying to defend his owner, jumps out of the car and runs toward the police officers.
Seeing the dog as a threat, they shot it.........

    Was definitely uncalled for.
I understand it's a big dog and seeing it running at you would be scary, but killing it was not the answer.

I haven't watched the video yet, but I probably will because I feel like I should see what happened instead of just hearing so I know what happened. Still, shooting a dog coming at you is too much. I know it might have been a big dog, and they can mess you up, but they could have tried something different. It never seems right when an animal is killed

In the end it's just a dog, but it's still very sad to see. I skipped to the part where the dog was shot and was only able to watch for a couple seconds. Having a dog myself makes this even more sad. When I see things like this with police brutality or police stepping over the limits of their authority, it make me sick to my stomach. They give all law enforcement a bad image. I'm not sure if what they did here would be considered illegal as far as shooting the dog goes, but, unless I'm mistaken, they did not have the authority to arrest the guy who was recording them, which was the reason the dog acted out in the first place. You can see the dog earlier in the video being very calm, and it's not until its owner is arrested that it starts to bother the police. And from what I saw, even when it does bother the police it only briefly jumps on one of them, and never really attacks any of them. Like I said, I don't know if that was legal or not, but they were the ones who caused the problem in the first place, and even if what they did was legal, they should still be punished for this.

This is the result of giving people who shouldn't have any authority at all a weapon to use at their discretion.

I'm not defending the cops on this one, because I haven't watched the video.

But cops are trained to use reasonable force to defend themselves. Yes, they might have gone overzealous in this case, but seeing a big dog charge at you when dogs are known in the past of attacking cops and other people defending their owners. There are attack dogs who are trained to maul anyone to death on a mere command, I have seen it happen and animal control officers work closely with the cops to prevent this stuff from happening often. Sadly, it still happens once in a while.

They probably jumped to the wrong conclusion, but not knowing what the dog would do probably was the reason they shot. I had a Siberian Husky who loved people but would go after anyone in a mailman uniform because one mailman gave the dog a frigging treat to be aggressive when he was around. And yes, we complained every day and threatened him with a lawsuit and he ignored us. It got so bad that the husky was nearly maced for doing the same to another not so happy mailman. You don't know the dog, you don't know what they're going to do. It's sad, but it's a part of life.

I agree with Amaury that the dog didn't deserve to die. But that's human nature. Like what Sara said, Cops are trained to defend themselves. Not siding with the cops though. The cops probably panicked and the first thing that comes to their minds....... Is killing it..... Kinda stupid actually. It's a dog, not a terrorist. They could've just try to distract it....

The man being arrested didn't make much sense to me, even reading further into the story. He was playing his music and filming them, apparently, and was arrested for 'interfering with the police'. He put his dog in his car before going willingly with police, but the dog jumped out of the window to defend him.

I understand it's not a pretty thing to watch, but before more of you not actually watching what happens jump to the conclusion that the dog violently charged at the police officer or something, I would like to point out that it didn't. It jumped out of the window, and barked at the police. The police officer drew his gun and stepped towards the dog, and the dog jumped up. The owner yelled at the dog, and the dog backed down. The police officer, for some reason, decides to reach out for the dog and the dog responds by jumping up in defense. The police officer proceeds to shoot it over and over again.

I don't really know what to think about this. Having a dog myself, it kind of ... well. It's kind of depressing. I know my dog would probably try and defend me, but he's harmless. He barks and jumps, maybe would nip in a dangerous situation, but that's about it. If I were in this situation and they shot my dog for harmlessly trying to protect me [ this dog did go at the police officer a bit, but it was clearly very nervous and backed off ], I'd be pretty heartbroken. I wish they would have done something else. I just don't understand why the dog was shot at all, let alone intentionally killed??? There were other options. So far I'm not seeing any reason for them to have arrested the man to begin with, but they could have left the dog alone and gotten into the car or whatever. It didn't have to die, from what I've seen.

But maybe there's more to it.

They probably don' t carry tranquilizing bullets around ?

I can' t tell whether the dog was being agressive or just wanted to play. All that jumping around and, as far as I can tell, not a single growl or attempt at biting doesn' t exactly scream danger to me. I tried seeing if it was waggling his tail (which would be a clear sign the dog' s happy) but the vid resolution is too low.

Even if it was being agressive I would at least have asked its owner to calm it down and strand it somewhere. Either way it took them what, 3 or 4 seconds to shoot first and ask questions later (if at all) ? Captain Courage would be so proud.

Seeing how the dog reacted to being shot was tough. Seriously hope these police get reprimanded for making such a poor decision. I don't even see why they had to arrest the guy in the first place. For recording them? It's not like as if he was "obstructing justice". There isn't more to this story than what's been shown. That cop could've fired into the air to scare off the dog. There was more than one way to handle the situation and the cop chose the stupidest option possible. It's sad to see police getting a bad reputation because of a few bad eggs.

This was actaully really horrible, I don't own a dog so I don't have that connection but I can understand someones deep connection to their dog and it was just... uhh, no, not good at all. It has physically angered me simply because the dog and the man didn't really do anything, and what about the guy who is actually filming the whole video- he doesn't get arrested. I really hope the policeman gets punished for this and they pay for all damage. I understand it was self defense but it's not as if the dog was about to kill them.

Well, it's not illegal to film cops, which is why the guy with the dog shouldn't have been arrested.

They said he was playing his music very loud and it was distracting the police, and he refused to turn it down, So those were the grounds for arresting him. I'm not sure if that's legal, but I believe it's what I heard. I'm not defending the police, though. One of the things that surprises me is the fact this dog wasn't wild, It's owner/master/tamer was right there. They could have got him to calm the dog down or something, But obviously this officer wasn't the brightest or most responsible.

    Also, there's this:
    http://www.prweb.com/releases/2009/02/prweb1946004.htm

Which was a lawsuit a couple years ago involving the same police dept. , for brutality.
So, that might change peoples opinions. Have at it.

This is just sick, that dog didn't need to die.

If I saw this happen to one of my dogs, I wouldn't just be heartbroken. I would probably go beat the **** out of whoever shot my dog and I wouldn't give a flying **** if I got arrested.

I don't care if its "just an animal" unlike some people, I respect life. I get depressed when I hear that someone has died or if I see someone/something kill another. Also, a dog or cat or any other house hold pet isn't "just an animal". If you ask me, they would be considered apart of my family and if you shot my dog, I would take it as you shooting my ****ing child.

Forgot to post this last week :

It explains why they arrested the guy and why they were cranked up to eleven, what with the armed roberry going on in the background. I still think they clearly could have handled this better (or just suck it up to begin with, as much of a dick as that guy was, shouldn' t the armed roberry kinda steal the show ?), though I now understand a little better where they' re coming from.
