You're starting a new grade and you just meet your teacher. You think she's pretty nice.

    SCHOOL YEAR STUFF

You get C's on both report cards and on your test you get a C. The teacher was saying you shouldn't be getting C's all the time because it's the end of teh year and this test was a review of what you've done recently.

You don't agree with her, and you family "likes" C's.
So you don't like her anymore.

This is what happened to my friend.

She said her family likes C's, but our teacher doesn't.

She's so dramatic. Our teacher is just expecting better from her, that's all. She said her mom wouldn't care if she got all F's if she "tried".

    Is that stupid to you?????

    Well, yes and no.

I do agree with the teacher and the mom on certain things. If your not exactly an A+ student, it shouldn't matter as long as you try your best. But there is a limit. You shoudln't take the whole "your parent is proud as long as you try" thing, because if you don't even try to at least put an effort then what's the point?

It all depends on the person. For instance, I am not good at math. I cannot grasp the concepts, and I cannot remember anything about it after about a week. Therefore, when I get a C in a math course (meaning "almost all of them" - just finished my last math course of my life, with a C), I'm pretty darn happy. However, if I get a C in an Anthropology course (my major), I get pretty pissed at myself. Even as I type, I am doing everything in my power to avoid looking at my grades, because I think I have a few Anthro C's (or maybe lower). If you're good at the subject, or plan to go into that field, you should not get C's. If you don't care or are just plain bad at it, a C is fine too.

Strive for the best. That's the supposed goal in the practice. This story you tell just seems like the parents have standards that the child conforms to in spite of the fact that if they tried harder they could do better. Though everything is subjective it's pretty clear that an A is the best thing you can get in terms of your future eligibility and learning is likely a byproduct. The whole trying thing is fuzzy because so many people that do badly are doing badly because they aren't trying whether they feel they are or not. I don't have a satisfactory response for this but overall the grade and learning should be the two things to look at first not effort taken in obtaining these.

Well I hate C's because I try my best on everything. And when I get anything lower than a 93 I don't feel good enough because I tried my best and my best isn't good enough.

C's are only good if that's your best. If you can get A's and you don't try then that's just lazy and rude to your teachers who work so hard to educate people that don't appreciate their work. I think you're teacher knows your friend can do better then that. So that's why she's bugging her.

Nope. It isn't stupid. You only have to exert a small amount of effort to get really good grades (B's or higher). It really doesn't take that much effort, but since it's forced on you it makes it seem harder and more trouble-some.

But, if you try, and come out to a C, it's not a huge deal, IMO. I've had instances where I put in tons of work and only come out to a C or BC. Of course, the teacher is also a deciding factor. Some teachers do their course work differently. -shrugs-

I think as long as you tried that's all that matters. Giving your personal best is what anyone should expect. Grades really don't mean anything as long as you did your hardest and tried your best to improve. Not everyone can get A's.

Haha. This is a replay of what my Allied Health teacher said. I suck at that class and he's always going on about how I should do better because it's my Major (BTW This is high school, not college.) I've never gotten higher than a C in that class anyway, even though all my other classes have had mostly A's and B's.

In your situation, I don't see what the teacher is fretting over if she's gotten better grades all the other quarters. It's not like that one grade will show up on her transcript, only the final grade will. If she's gotten all B's, most likely (Unless she fails her final) she'll still get a B put on her transcript anyway.

I don't believe C's are bad if you tried

Trust me hun... I'm in my last year of school, doing tests similar to your SAT's and everybody's grades matter, you have to claw your way to the top, otherwise you'll suck at life... -.-; that's what the teacher's said.

Anyway A C is still good, I mean I'm sitting on C's and I'm apparently doing extremely well.... -.-; (again) as long as I don't fail I should get the job I want (which 98% of my grade can't get xDD).

As long as your trying hard and staying above a fail, you'll do fine

C (or 7 here) is actually considered to be a pretty good grade in my school.
And there are many subjects that I'd be thrilled to get a C in, especially if I studied hard. Of course, If I'd get a C from a subject that I'm normally great in, I'd be disappointed, but most of the time, I'm content in a C.

I can't stand C's, but if I get them I would still know that I worked as hard as I could.
In the end, that's all that matters.

I think whatever grades you get are fine as long as you're really trying your very hardest. :/

Like my English teacher said: "I can be prouder of a C student then a A-B student if the C student tried harder."

QFT. It may sound idealistic, but trying your best is really all that matters.

Well, if she really tried then I don't think they're bad. But it kind of sounds like she doesn't care cause her family doesn't care, so she's not trying. And in that case, yes, it's very stupid.

My grades range from A's to D's, but unlike aforementioned C student, I don't try that hard.

I think C's are alright if, like everyone has already stated, you tried your hardest. And even then you should still strive to do a little better.
But if you just barely tried, or didn't try at all, you shouldn't be proud.

I get C's and D's, but C's are good, there Average. But of course she should try better next time instead of getting in a huff. I am just glad I don't get E's =\ (F's in America are E's in Australia)

I don't think it's a reason to hate a teacher if the teacher tells you that you shouldn't be getting Cs straight. The teacher, if anything, is trying to motivate the student to put some more effort into the class. The teacher sees that the person possibly can do more.

With a response of 'my parents don't mind Cs', it does kind of say that perhaps this friend is not actually giving what she could to the class and is content to have a 'C' because she isn't about to get in trouble or disciplined for it.

Being as I when I was in HS, I either had As or I had Cs or occasionally Ds in classes, I know for some I could have tried harder but I didn't have the time or in some cases, I just really could not find the class interesting enough to make my brain remember anything. In college, I work a lot harder since grades really do matter a lot there. In high school, they do...and they don't. If you want to go to a community college after school, you can raise grades well there. It's what I did, so that I could transfer to uni with a solid GPA and school grades didn't matter as much as college ones have.

In the end, Cs are good enough if that's what you can do to pass a difficult class. However, expecting a teacher to not encourage or push you a bit is kind of silly. That's the teacher's job. It may frustrate a person if he/she is really trying and giving their all, but there are things that student can do too such as ask the teacher for some assistance. Quite a few teachers become jaded and won't say anything to students that seem to be more capable but aren't putting through the effort they could. Others still do care on actually educating and not just pushing people through the grades. I'd have been probably grateful in a way if some of my teachers had shown a bit more caring for the students. The ones that did were tough, but I always enjoyed them more.

You shouldn't settle for C's. C's are bad, unless you can honestly say that you have given it your all. If not, then it just means your being plain lazy, and that kind of attitude can stick with you for life. You will never get any where in life like that.

If you honest to goodness tried, than yeah, I say that C's are okay. I've been working my butt off in chemistry and I just don't get it; I've got a D+ in the class. I feel horrible about the grade, but there's no extra credit and no re-do's. I've done all I can, and I've still got a D+. So, yeah, C's are fine with me - as long as you really try.
