For those of you who may wonder, now or in the future, why I will always refer to the beloved blonde maned and cross eyed pony as Derpy ... *sniff* just watch this video ...
I always referred to her as Derpy, even from the start. Besides, the name Derpy is canon as seen in "The Last Roundup" (before some butthurt people complained and they had to ruin the episode by censoring it).
The thing is that it was mostly parents of children who are mentally challenged. They thought it was harmfully directed at their children, for some reason. Hasbro freaked out, made a recall, changed the episode and ... Derpy was no more. Basically all those parents were saying though was "That character is making a mockery of my child and shouldn't be shown on TV." When in reality, Derpy had nothing to do with being mentally handicapped. She was 'ditsy' but I don't believe she was mentally challenged. Just because you've got 'derpy' eyes and act goofy doesn't mean you have to be mentally challenged, right? Oh well, Derpy lives on in the hearts of all the true fans. I can list a bunch of cartoon characters from my childhood that could be mistakenly perceived as "mentally challenged." Did I think they were aimed at making fun of the mentally challenged. Nope, not back then, not today, not ever. Same with Derpy. P.S. The writer of "The Last Roundup" has a son who is actually mentally challenged. So if she was fine with the scene from the beginning, obviously there was nothing offensive to begin with.
Your logic is flawless ... in my opinion anyway. There's always going to be something that people use to bash something. To be honest though, I really didn't like the original voice though to be honest. I prefer the way Derpy sounds when voiced by the aforementioned voice actress. Well maybe one day we can see Derpy make a return ... well 'Ditzy' I suppose. Then I'll just watch the episode, stop and find a dubbed version on youtube for the derpy scene, and then continue with said episode. *sigh* ... the life of a brony.
Now this is the part where I disagree with you. Honestly, I felt the actress they used after completely ruined her character fror me. The first voice will always be what I associate Derpy with (as well as any good fandubs out there).
I just felt like the voice didn't suit her bubbly personality (pun intended). I think the sweet and innocent voice sounds more appropriate. That's the good thing about having opinions though, the differ. The original voice was alright I just didn't think it fit the character. Like Tara Strong fits perfectly with Twilight Sparkle. I couldn't see anyone but Ashleigh Ball do the voice for Rainbow Dash, Applejack, or Blythe Baxter (I series jumped). The voice just didn't feel right.
It didn't fit? Personally, I couldn't have thought of a more perfect match for her 'derp' personality. I felt her second voice made her sound more like some random dumb blonde (no offense to blonde people) rather than a lovable derp. It would be like replacing the voice of Ed from Ed,Edd,n Eddy with that of Double D. That's why I enjoy the fandubs, because they're very different from the 2nd voice (but the 1st one will always be my favorite). EDIT: Ok, I think we're going a bit off topic here. Wasn't this thread supposed to be about names rather than voices?
Not really. It was just generally a thread about the two opposing sides, Derpy vs Ditzy. That includes appearance, title, personality, and vocal attributes ... or that's what I'm going with anyway. Besides, it's a meaningful conversation ... sort of. So it's not really spam. Plus I don't think anyone else watches this place anymore *pouts*. Where's all the bronies at?
