Cosplay Prop Help

So, for Halloween I'm being Jaune Arc from RWBY, and I am at a loss for how to make his shield. I already have the sword (wrong colors, nothing that paint can't solve), but need tips for how to make the shield. Here's a screen shot:



As you can see, it's a bit taller in the center. That's because the shield doubles as the sheath for the sword (meaning the shield parts fold outward).

In a sense, what's the best way to make something like this?

 

If you have half the creative genius this guy has you'll think of something.

 

I'd probably use wood and hinges or something
