Do you know what I hate? When kids write things like "I'll give it 2 him." or "That's 4 me." It's fine on IMs, Forum sites, and even E-Mails! My mom is a teacher at a Middle School, in fact I'm here in the school as I'm typing (I'm already off for summer and I come here cause I have nowhere else to go.) Anyway, sometimes I take a look at their word usage and I am disgusted. She is a Science teacher and so when I read what had been answered to the question, "What role does the blood play in the human body?", they put "It takes oksygen 2 da body 4 to make it beeter." I am so disappointed that they are mixing "Computer Talk" with real grammar and spelling. I can't believe they using their "IM Talk" on school assignments, essays and much more.
    Any thoughts?

I think it's okay and completely appropriate on messengers...to an extent. There's always a point where it goes too far, and unfortunately, there are people (like my younger sister) who have lost their minds to it and use it in everyday conversations and school papers.

    (This topic is so over-used...)

It is completely acceptable in IM etc as it is a way to shorten the time it takes to send messages etc. Also, in text messages where it was originally used (I think), it was used to cut down the cost of sending messages.

I don't think it has much use in written english, such as in school, exams or the workplace. As long as it is not over-used in speech I think it's ok and quite funny actually. But I HATE it when I can't tell what someone is saying because they have taken all of the inportant letters out

That's just a stupid thing to do. I mean, they should seperate there computer life, and all it's lingo, with there school life.

I think it's fine being used in Instant Messages and Text messages, but anywhere else is just... No.

Instant Message is fine to me because if you're trying to talk fast it will allow you to say what you're trying to say faster. Text Message because it's tedious to type out everything on a cell phone.

On forums, you'll just look young and stupid to other users. Ones like 'lol', 'ftw', or 'etc' are fine as long as it doesn't get too excessive. In Email, there's really no need for it. You have time to type everything out, so why not go the extra mile and actually have the recipient understand you?

On school papers, or any other written material that will be graded it's plain ridiculous. If I were your mother I would have made those kids rewrite the papers and take points off.

Y'know, I was kinda scared when I read that. It's disturbing that kids would even think of doing things like writing an assignment in the way of a messenger. It's pure laziness.

Yeah i agree it is ok to use it in IM etc, but to use it in classes etc it's ain't good. It can become a nasty habit. I mean if they were to use that in say an exam, they would most likely penalized for it. I have seen it happen when i was in secondary school.

No kidding. I'm tired of getting "WTF ARE YOU DOING, SKYE?"'ed all day long. It's really annoying.

It doesn't reflect well on your intelligence, so why do people do it anyway? If it's a fad of some sort, then I'm seriously disturbed.

As numerous members said or perhaps implied before me, they are just being lazy. They'll most likely stop doing this Computer/IM lingo once they realise they aren't getting any smarter or when their grades are dropping dramatically.

It's just a fad...a fad that if you show in real life and when you get a job, you'll just come crashing down.

This fad lasts a very long time for some.

I remember I had to talk with an anonymous person over MSN for a Psychology Research Study. This woman was around 23 and she 'styll talked lik dis, omgwtfbbqkthxbai'.

I'm pretty sure it's partially in part of how 'cool' they will continue to believe it is.

It's a stupid fad that has invaded the youth of today. They'll never get over it so it's useless to talk with them to change.

The only internet words a friend and I actually say in real life are "WTF" and "Lawl", but we just use it as comic effect or dramatic effect.

Yep i'm not gonna lie. Ive noticed it started creeping into various school papers and such. Its just a really bad habit. I say k as lot as well. Which is really stupid because im saving 1 stinking letter, and at the speed i type it would be just as easy to right ok.

    Guess im really weird.
Sorry to the guy who posted it, im one of the bad guys i suppose.

I think it's fine to use Computer Lingo on MSN and forums but other than that it can get annoying. I espically dislike it when people you are talking to in real life well say something like LOL or WTF.

This is my take on the situation:
Texting: Sure, as long as it's MARGINALLY understandable.
IMing: I personally tolerate a lot less of it, since you have the keyboard at your disposal. Besides, I like to think of it as good practice.
    Talking: Minimal, if at all.
    Anywhere else: NO.

I dislike it for the reasons that most people dislike it for: it's annoying, it implies that the person is unintelligent, and it shows laziness.

On a side note, one time in school someone wrote a research paper in "Text Talk" and the teacher read it to us, pointing out all of the instances of "Text Talk." It was hilarious, but short-lived. (the paper, as you might imagine, wasn't all that long)

 Agreed. The only internet lingo I tend to use is 'lol', 'omg' and 'wtf'. Other than that, I prefer normal typing.
