why is it called common sense if it's rare for most people?? i think it's a rather good question. . .
It's called that because it's something that everyone should have. Common sense would tell one not to eat something that's been on the floor for too long(unless you obviously have no choice). I mean...I don't have to explain to you as to why you shouldn't do that. Also, it would include not doing things that are supposed to be obviously stupid and overly dangerous. It doesn't really seem too catchy if you call it the "You Should Know Better" Sense. <<
You're misinterpreting the 'common'. It doesn't mean that common sense is actually common. It means that common sense is common in comparison to other types of sense. It's still ridiculously rare.
Yeah, common sense is defferent for everybody. I think it's bassically listening to what they teach you. Because if your parents say its okay to knock someone out, than that is common sense to you.. Ofcourse, most of us know better...
By my definition, common sense is the things that just about everyone should pick up rather quickly naturally. "Fire is hot" This is something that you should be able to figure out with your first encounter with fire, and confirm it several times throughout your life. So common sense isn't rare. In fact use of it isn't either. If someone truly lacked common sense they would be rather confused about everything. Heck if they could figure out walking they would then be constantly walking into walls. People just tend to extend common sense into what is obvious to them, or what would be more apparent from a outside look. Getting into a vigilante fight with the school bully will get you in trouble. Basic logic should tell you that, but it isn't intuitive. Maybe in the moment you thought the administration would be sympathetic, or maybe you got so caught up in revenge it wasn't even on your radar. But even going with the common extension where it is basic logic and not just intuition, there is a difference between having it and using it. Just about anyone you talk to should have basic logic, but it might not be a skill they use on the fly. It's the concept of 20/20 hindsight. Once all is said and done a lot of people can use basic logic to say what the right thing for them to have done was. That doesn't change the fact that they failed to notice this at the time.
I think it's because it's basic things that we should know , but for some of us we do not use our common sense , it's the simple things we should know and do but we don't because we are stupid and don't use our common sense , it's rare people do use it.
Common sense is common. It is the knowledge to walk along the pavement in a normal manner, and not prance along. It is the knowledge to be quiet by yourself, insted of talking to thin air. It is the knowledge on how to greet someone properly instead of not know what to do at all. Common knowledge is effectively common social behaviour. Those who have appropriate social behaviour have 'common sense'. Therefore it is common. The phrase 'use your common snse' is used as to insult those who don't act in the appropriate social pattern. It is not because they lack it usually, but because they haven't used it in the proper manner.
