WEhat if you were able to give a person a certain amount of rep points, and the higher your rep is, the higher numbers, the greater rep you can choose to give or take

I don't think this is possible, and even if it was it would get completely out of hand. People would give others an astronomical amount of rep. I think the system is fine the way we have it.

    It won't be happening.

They way it works now means that everyone comes from the same fair level. The amount you give is based on factors that everyone has to deal with such as posts, rep and how long you have been a member. To increase how much you give become more active.

    Rep suggestion

I was wondering if there was some way to regulate the rep you give, as in give a person 3 rep while having 7 rep power. I'm not sure if there's an app for that but I think it'd be useful.

How in any way would that be useful?

My opinion, take the limits off. Ok I get, "We don't want you giving the same guy rep 1,000 times." I understand that. But some people, *Cough Droid and Llave* these people just deserved to be rep'ed on their posts, and it upsets me that either "You must give more rep..." or "You can not give anymore rep today..."
I'm not asking for anything radical here am I?

This might not be the best idea since it could lead to bribes using rep.

Just to make sure I understand, do you mean instead of giving them the full 7 points from your rep power, you just give them 3? Or as in make it so you can rep them several times at once?

Well, rep power reflects the rep you have, so personally I think it makes sense that it works the way it does... Can you elaborate a bit on how/why you'd want it to work differently? The issue for me is that I think changing it in either regard, barring the fact that it may not be possible, could lead to abuse of the system.

He's talking about using 3 points of your rep power on one post.

Basically like one person giving you rep for the same post three times over, which isn't allowed as the system is now.

What I took out of it was to have the ability to have a single rep of weaker power than you have. Like if I have a rep power of 7 but want to give a noobie some welcome rep I might purposefully set the power lower, to maybe one. And that I would support

Others are reading it as messing with rep restrictins to allow multiple reps in a row and that I'll have to say no on.

@Rhiscx: That has been brought up before, the concensous is that you can keep a log of people that you want to rep and can't (such as a word document or a PM to yourself). If you find yourself getting more and more behind then you likely need to re-evaluate what deserves rep.

I'm reading this like this: I have a power of 13. I read somebody's post and agree on a few points, but not on the post as a whole. I want to leave rep for those few points, but not the full amount I can leave. So I want to be able to leave 4 or 5 points instead of the full one.

Am I reading this right? Because I can kind of see how and why you'd want to do that, I just don't know if it can be done.

That's how I read it as well.

If that's case, and it can be implemented or something, I don't see how it can be abused.

Yeah, this is what I meant, sorry for not expressing the idea properly. I want it implemented mainly because of the reasons already stated, especially what Mixt said.

I feel like it should just be left alone. I'm not totally opposed to the idea, but I don't know. It's not that it wouldn't work. But first, you should look for a mod that does what you're asking to see exactly how it would work or if any other features were included/if it's free, etc.

Either way I feel like if you rep someone, you should just rep them. I mean...if you give someone welcome rep, for what reason would you want to lower it?

The only way I could see myself using the feature is if I really wanted to derep someone, but since I don't believe in derepping, I'd just lower the rep and tell them their post was inappropriate or something.

Lowering the power just seems offensive, IMO. I'm not sure anyone would know you lowered it (another reason to look into a mod), I just... If someone reps you for this suggestion, wouldn't you rather you get full rep than someone crankin' down the power? Shouldn't giving positive reputation continue being a way to fully encourage growth on the forums?

Once again, not totally opposed or offended. Just not really for it either unless there's a really good reason for it.

I dug around a bit and didn't see anything of the sort. So that would be a "no" here

But to make the point anyway. Some of this really depends on the person. I mean I put a higher value on rep than most members. I don't understand the complaints about wanting to rep more people in one day because I rarely rep more than one person in a day (I only recently gave enough rep to hide ones I sent in September). Not all posts are equal, so I don't like repping people equally. So thus I tend not to rep people as much for the little things. So for me personally I would be more likely to rep people in general if such a system was in place, even if it is less.

But again, beating a dead horse seeing as I'm fairly sure the mod doesn't exist.

Keep looking; I'm pretty sure I saw a mod that does exactly this. I may be thinking of something else, but I think I recall seeing this. Check the mods forum.

It's not exactly our job to find mods, if you guys want something it's much easier for you to find exactly what you're looking for and then link it to us.

That being said, I don't really think it's necessary. I understand the idea behind wanting it, but like Jayn said, either rep someone or don't. There's nothing wrong with welcoming a new member with a lot of rep, and that's pretty much the only usergroup I consistently rep because of how many points I have.
In the end rep really isn't that big of a deal anymore anyway. I imagine dereps aren't used that often so why not give someone positive rep for all it's worth?

To summarize what is being talked about in this thread:

    1. I believe it's fine as it is, either you fully rep someone or you don't. This isn't an mmo, you're not distributing stat points.

    2. The rep limits are there for a reason, and that will not be lifted.

Agreed. I was referring to those who wanted it, not the staff.
