Doesn't it give you the option to skip it before it actually starts? Typically it's a "Press any key" sort of thing. I apologize if I misunderstood you, but that's what I got out of it.

Did you happen to throw some program files/directories to the bin instead of properly removing said programs ? If you did then :

-if you remember which programs that was : you can still reinstall them, then uninstall them properly (via Windows Configuration Panel => Install/Uninstall Programs Panel)

-if you don' t remember which programs that was : open the Windows Configuration Panel=>Install/Uninstall Program Panel.
You' ll see a list of all the Programs that are installed on your computer. Then open the Program Files directory located on your main hard drive (probably C:Program Files), every program installed on your computer is supposed to have its own directory there. If one of the program listed in the Windows Configuration Panel - Install/Uninstall Panel doesn' t have a matching directory located in Program Files that means you threw the directory without uninstalling the program. Install them again, and then remove them properly (uninstall them via Windows configuration panel => Install/Uninstall programs). The checkdisk shouldn' t freeze anymore.

You don' t just throw a program, you have to uninstall it. Worst case scenario if you really can' t find out which programs you threw instead of uninstalling them then you can always wipe the hard drive clean and install Windows again, but I have a feeling your father wouldn' t like that at all.

If you are okay with downloading a new program I would reccomend Advanced System Care by IObit. There is a pay version of it, but the free version works very well too. It does an indepth check of the system and makes repairs to it. It has solved a lot of problems for me without me even needing to think about it. It doesn't fix everything though.

Also a disclaimer here. THat program includes registry fixing which is a good idea and this one works, but it is also one of the top ways to instal malware yourself. Make sure that the program has good reveiws before downloading it and then make sure you download it from a trusted source.

BTW what anti-virus do you use? I just want to guage how justified your Dad's paranoia is here.

How do you know it hangs? How long did you leave the last step working?
In the previous steps, does it find any errors?

Stage 5 is verifying free space. If you have a hard disk with lots of free space it can take up to several hours.
Does the hard disk continue spinning or does it stop working completely when it hangs up?
