I bet you anything Batman wasn't being funny. He typed that with the straightest face possible as he has no sense of humor.
#SaveYoungJustice The production team behind Teen Titans Go! enjoys mocking its viewer demographic. Twist the knife further, why don't you...
Addendum: Does anyone else find this isn't a baaaad show? It just has no reason to be connected to the source material and comes off as a bit insulting to what once was? Because I feel that way. And I feel it replaced Young Justice, too. It's like they wanted people to dislike this show...
Talking about the show itself: it's hit or miss. Some episodes are great, some are terrible but overall I like it. The burger vs. burrito one was absolute garbage, while this one had me laughing out loud multiple times. I was totally against the show until I saw it and realized what the intent was. They cancelled Young Justice and Green Lantern at the same time and replaced them with this and Beware the Batman. I mean yeah, I would rather have Young Justice as well but this is okay. Aside from the main cast and a few cameos, it's not connected. It doesn't reference anything that happened in that show, and it doesn't add to it. TTG takes the absurd characterizations that were in TT, exaggerates them, and plays them up for comedy. The characters in the original were always equally as absurd, but were supposed to be taken seriously. Every time Robin shouts "Titans, go!" in that show, I can't contain the laughter because it is ridiculous, while in this show it's fitting. If you aren't able to see the humor, intentional or not, in things you enjoy, you won't like this show. It's a parody. I think a lot of people (myself included) were put off at first because they didn't understand what it was supposed to be. When it was first announced people were calling it a sequel to Teen Titans, which isn't true in the least. Just taking the show for what it is, it's fine.[DOUBLEPOST=1384634577][/DOUBLEPOST] It's hardly mocking.
Something I found upsetting about Teen Titans Go!, is that it used an already created universe to draw in viewers. The show runners hadn't seen much of it's predecessor, but already had the humor and demographic in mind. While I appreciate the returning voice actors and maybe some of the humor, this doesn't work as a show for me. Shorts maybe, but I hardly feel like it deserves a time slot so long to convey so little. They could have made up their own characters to a new setting and the show probably wouldn't have the same amount of hold it has now. Cartoon Network actually renewed the show for a second season because of it's ratings. Such a shame, because I really liked Young Justice and even Green Lantern the Animated series had my interest. But I don't like the new DC shows. (Can't forgive what Beware the Batman did to Alfred)
I was joking. It was rather supportive of them to intentionally reference the fan-sprung campaigns in favor of the shows' continuation, and although I do not watch Teen Titans Go! I can appreciate the production team's effort. I always enjoy reading friendly interchanges between contemporaries.
Conversation got real for a minute ... lol. I personally like Teen Titans Go because I miss Teen Titans. That show was crazy awesome good fun times ... 0_o Anyway, I liked Young Justice as well but when they switched to that last arc and sort of jumped a bit into the future ... I kind of lost interest. I like how it got a little more realistic and whatnot but it felt like the heart was lost from the show. I haven't really noticed anything fishy about TTG that would imply them mocking YJ but then again I don't pay that much attention when I'm cleaning out my DVR at two in the morning either. Everyone has their opinions though. I say just let the show be what it is. Some mind draining, cheap laugh creating entertainment. It doesn't have a rich story line but it's got a few punchlines here and there I'm quite fond of. Favorite part was where Raven was depicted as a 'brony'. Watch closely and you'll see. They'll ALL SEE!!! Muaghahahahahahaha!!!
#SaveTTClassic #TeenTitansStop Here's the thing though: It's a bad parody. It is actually less funny than a show that can do more than be funny. The fact that there is no continuity, that it does not pay homage to what came before but rather extracts it from context and then exaggerates it turns it into a cookie-cutter sitcom where all the regulars dress funny. Because the characters do not conform to their personalities from the original show, they are free to do whatever they want - thus they are boring. They never set expectations that can then be subverted. They never tell anything more complicated than a fart joke. Half of the gags would be pretty much the same with a totally different cast of characters, and the ones that do rely on their unique traits are so simplistic, and sometimes downright bizarre, that they're more groanworthy than amusing. Yeah, it's not meant to be heartfelt or meaningful, it's meant to be wacky and off-the-wall - but even with that in mind, I've seen better. Much better. So not only is it basically a limbless malform of its predecessor but it fails to meet even relevant expectations. That effectively doubles the frustration, since it likely would've been better as the show people wanted than it is now as the show people didn't want. This is the same back-and-forth that happened after DmC did that gag where Dante tosses off a white wig and says "Not in a million years." It is mockery, that is the essential element of the joke, but that's not the real issue here. I doubt they did it to be mean-spirited, but context matters as much as intent in this case. It's a polarizing joke to tell, because it's clear that people who don't enjoy TTG won't find it funny, but everyone who does will laugh and go "Take that, haters!" It wasn't mean, but it was thoughtless... which is an impression I get from the rest of the show, come to think of it.
The thing is, I don't care. I like it anyway. I'm not going to over-analyze something that's meant to be 10 minutes of off-the-wall humor and nothing more. Intent is everything, and the intent here is to have a few minutes of cheap laughs. Sometimes it succeeds, sometimes it doesn't. I don't watch TTG for intelligent drama, I watch it to laugh at absurd characters doing absurd things. And like I said, it's not connected. Character designs and voice actors do not equate to being in the same continuity, because there is no continuity in this show. If they didn't have the same designs or voice actors, most of the things you're saying you wouldn't be saying because you would never feel the need to criticize it for failing to be something it's not even trying to be. Criticizing the characters in the parody of the original for not having the same definitive traits and not adhering to them is ridiculous. The show immediately said that it was going to be an absurd parody when in the first episode they go searching for a magic sandwich, and then fight over pie, and nothing else. Any expectations you hold onto are your own hangup and the show's not trying to meet them. That's not nearly the same thing. That is blatantly acknowledging and poking fun at something, while this is on screen for no more than two seconds, and not the focus. It's a wink to the audience. If you blink you miss it. And no, that's not what it is at all. It's an east-egg thrown in to give people like me a cheap laugh -- it shows the creators are very aware of what people wanted. They don't draw attention to it, they don't say anything about it, it's just there. If someone doesn't find it funny, that's his problem for being unable to take a light-heated show light-heartedly. Above all, I like it. I like the original as well. I feel no need to hate on this show for not being the original and not trying to be the original. It is what it is. Is it smart comedy? No. Does it make me laugh a few times once a week? Yes, and that's enough for me because that's all it wants to do.
E: Y'know what, fuck this and fuck me. I'm upset with myself for this thread, I overreacted. In the interest of transparency the original text of this post is spoiler'd below, but I really regret goin' crazy on it like I did and I no longer identify with my words here. Spoiler I dunno why you feel the need to tell me that. You made it clear already. You're allowed to like it, just don't go excusing it for its flaws. Neither am I. I don't lose sleep over the show, it just bothers me when people try to defend its choices, especially in comparison to the original. So... why not something better? Which is exactly the problem. ITALICS FIGHT Now let me clarify: The problem is not that the show was meant to have continuity, but that the lack of consistency even with itself causes far too much of the humor to fall flat. The characters are predictably unpredictable: They do and say whatever the current joke dictates, and their thought process goes no further. It's dull. /effectively doubles writing time of post to make it clear I rate the show a failure as an independent creation /still accused of only hating it for not being a TT sequel w e l p First off: No, it's not ridiculous at all, because they are the same characters. I'm really not sure why that needs to be said. Same show or not, why do they not have anything in common with themselves? What's the point? Why bother changing them when you already have templates to work with, templates that synergize well, templates that have produced great humor before? Is a parody obligated to toss all the rules out the window, or is that just what shallow parodies are like? Should a parody not at least have some grounding in the workings of its predecessor in order to make fun of it? Second, they don't have any traits. Each is a mess of random humor tropes that the writers thought would be good for a rib but didn't really think that hard about. Which I've already said like four times, jfc. I expect the damnable show to not be a waste of time. If TTG was not a Teen Titans show, it would still be a colossal waste of time. ...I really don't see how the amount of time it's onscreen makes a difference. That just sounds like reaching. Of course they're aware, after people have said it! Christ, this is what we give people points for now, having their friggin' eyes open... I don't hate it because it's not the original. And I knew I'd be accused of it, otherwise I wouldn't have written a friggin' essay in my own damn defense before anyone said a word, but I guess it's inevitable that if you hate TTG, you get accused of being a purist. When all we had was a name, and everyone assumed it was a continuation, I had mixed feelings about that considering the note the series ended on. I didn't know if I wanted Teen Titans to continue. In the end, yeah, I was upset when I saw what it was - but it's not my decision what happens to Teen Titans, so I decided to give it a shot. Then it was a piece of shit. And then people defended that piece of shit and said it deserved to stand next to its predecessor. So just to reiterate: I don't hate it because I compare it to the original. I hate it because other people compare it to the original. If they'd just let them be different shows and not feel the need to justify TTG's existence, then maybe it wouldn't wind me up like it does.
