    windows sucks with foreign characters... you need to download the windows language pack for japanese/chinese etc. just look on a windows support site

    Control panel->Regional and language options-> Languages tab->Check "install files for east asian languages". Press ok and I think you'll be prompted to insert your windows xp cd. Do it and your problem will be solved (probably).
