Do you say Dragon Ball Zed instead of Dragon Ball Z?

    Zee

'Zed' is actually really dumb now that I think about it

It' s Zed in French and Catalan. Very weird choice for a Frenchman, since calling a series a "z" series means it' s cheap or lame or both.
Does anyone know what that z is even doing there anyway ? I mean the manga didn' t change its name mid-course, so why did the anime ?

Because it was originally called Doragon Bōru Zetto. So I assume that is where the Z comes from.

Wait what ? When ? I bought a Japanese manga way back when (volume 40), I couldn' t decipher a single kanji on its cover but the English title just said Dragon Ball.

I was speaking of the anime itself. I believe the entirety of the manga is simply referred to as 'Dragon Ball/Doragon Bōru'.

Oh, okay. The manga got released way after the anime here, but in Japan it was the other way around. At the point where I expected the manga to jump from DB to DBZ there was just a picture of Toriyama (well, the lil robot he often used as an avy) saying "pss, this isn' t over, turn the page and you' ll see !"

Not sure what that was all about, I' m wondering if he initially expected to end the series there or something.

they kept z on NA db manga for marketing purposes alone. The actual title of the manga is DB. Z is just an anime thing since the one manga was adapted into two different animes. it's like the exact same thing with Naruto and Shippuden if you're familiar with those.

Oh, yes, at a time skip in the story as well. Not nearly as much of a change of tone though, I can see why you would want to split DB in two around there.

I say Dragonball Zee rather than Zed. Probably because the (English) theme song says Zee.

Zee because it just flows better and that's how it's always been called.

It's weird now that I think about it...

I always called it Dragon Ball "zee", because that's what everyone refers to it, so it sounds natural, but I cringe every time I do so. I get very elitist about the way people pronounce things is why.
