Okay, I make it no secret that I'm not a fan of Doctor Who. Sure, I'll attack it harshly at times, but that's usually in jest and not to be taken too seriously. I only saw the one that started the reboot, and about three episodes of it. I didn't find the actors bad, but the writing just seemed dumb. It didn't feel clever for me; it was being random for random's sake, which is not creativity from my point of view.

Lately, I've been surrounded by it. Sure, I can avoid it on the internet to an extent. But one of my classes is filled with English majors, and they love the hell out of it. We could be talking about something, then the subject just randomly changes to that, and I don't want to say anything and be "that guy". I remember in a Creative Writing class that we were asked to say something we dislike, to which I was greeted with a chorus of "what?", "are you ridiculous?", and "how can you not like it?". I wasn't even allowed to say anything on the matter.

So, should I give it another chance? I originally went in with an open mind, even wanting to like it, but this time, I have a different background with it.

I would hope that they would take a look at my complaints about it (that I stated above) and consider if I would enjoy the series and that the first three were really bad flukes.

The writing can be hit-or-miss sometimes, I guess, but overall it's pretty good. I just watch it and like it without thinking much about it, though, so maybe @Misty might be better to ask; I know she has some issues with NuWho.

Son, I'm in the same boat. You like what you like, you don't what you don't. If you feel you want to give the show another chance, then go for it, there's no harm. But if you are inclined to re-watch because other people don't approve or get your opinion, I would not re-watch it for that reason. Embrace your opinion, even if it does change. Just don't let it change because of what the majority say about it.

Weeeeeeeell ... It's really up to you. If you don't like it you don't like it. You can't force yourself to like something that you don't like. You could try watching some of the newer seasons, maybe you'd like something from them, but don't force yourself. It's not the end of the world if you don't like Doctor Who, I don't care what Enzy says ;) I would never force someone to watch something I like knowing full well they don't.

I personally like the show. I couldn't really tell you why I like the show as I like just about everything about the show. If the English majors in your class are so self-centered as to shun you for not watching a show then you're better off not speaking to them in the first place. If you want to be devious we could probably just give you a few references you could use in conversing with them to avoid suspicion. You could always try, "Fezzes are cool." Also, "Bow-ties are cool."

I say as long as you've made an attempt to watch it that should be enough. Personally, I don't have any interest in Dr. Who. Never have really. But people are free to watch what they want.

I thought the same at first, bit of wibley wobley ballooney, I only kept watching because there wasn' t anything better on tv at 2 am. Very hit or miss, but when the tenth doctor came up the show started serializing rather than lining loners and it grew on me. Not exactly my favorite show ever, but it has its moments.

I'd say just watch it when you have nothing better to do with your life. That's how I handle it.

    Whut? xD

No one can force you to watch and like it, not everyone does like it, it just doesn't resonate with other people. God knows I've tried getting my sister to watch it, she enjoys it and watched the 50th anniversary but she wouldn't sit there religiously and watch every episode like I do.

The great thing with this show is that if there is a part you don't like then there are millions of other writers/doctors/companions or just era's in general. One Doctor won't resonate as well with people as with others, same with the writing so if you give it another chance then watch an episode from a Doctor you haven't seen. I will happily recommend some of the best episodes from each Doctor that you can try. If you still don't like it then that is your choice, you shouldn't be shunned, but I suppose that is the collective mentality of fans- when grouped together they will shun the nonbeliever xD Of course you don't have to give it another chance, it's your choice.

I refused to touch the show for years, it was a nerdy show therefore I automatically hated it... and then Cat came along and I gave it a chance and oh would you look at me now xD Just to say, I do have a bit of an undying love of this show and although I see episodes where the writing is weaker than in others, I still love it nonetheless.

I didn't even start watching Doctor Who until season six was already airing, even though lots of people told me I would probably like it. I thought it looked a bit nerdy too. It wasn't until my fam watched an episode one night when it was on, and the next day, it was all they could talk about. Then I watched the first episode, and thought it was kinda lame, but I stuck with it because it kinda reminded me of the old Twilight Zone show, and some of those episodes can be super lame themselves. Parts of the first season were better than others, but I did think it was really cheesy, and I actually hated Rose for a long time, just because she annoyed me. All the while, I dragged my fam along and they agreed. It was really the "next time on..." teasers that pulled us through the first season.

Then David Tennant happened. Suddenly, we were gathering around the TV for hours at a time, laughing, crying, yelling "FINGERS ON LIPS!" When people started talking through the show, and having deep thought provoking conversations about the Tenth Doctor's emotional depth and the little inconsistencies at least one of us would catch. (The inconsistencies get way worse with Moffat writing the show, but that's another thread altogether.)

So pretty much, I do recommend giving the show another chance if you're open to it, but don't do it for anyone else. If you don't like it, no one should influence what you watch and like.

I have to go to class soon, but I defs agree with both Laurence and Anixe here. I WILL HAVE MORE TO POST but a very condensed version of that is that as long as you give it a shot & not let your opinion sway because of good or bad things you've heard, that should be enough. I hate when people say "how can you not like x" and have been making a lot of effort to try to avoid saying it myself. You're entitled to your own opinion of something, and while other people may disagree, as long as you aren't parading it around as sheer, infallible fact (not you specifically but just people in general), you're fine.

It's fine if you don't like it. Not everyone does. In any group of people, there will be people who dislike a thing, regardless of how good the rest of the group thinks it is. For example, I have a friend who doesn't like chocolate. Most people can agree that chocolate is delicious, but she doesn't like it. At all.

If you want to give Doctor Who another try though, I suggest watching either Blink or Girl in the Fireplace, or Eleventh Hour. The first two were Tenth Doctor episodes, written by Steven Moffat and are seen as some of the best episodes in the series. The third was also written by Moffat, but with the Eleventh Doctor. Eleventh Doctor is a decent place to start because you don't need to have watched Ninth and Tenth Doctors to understand what's going. New Companion, new Doctor, etc.

I used to like Doc Who, but I think it got sinfully awful at some point along the way. So I'm speaking from the perspective of someone who has watched some of it but would never go back that way; you don't seem like you'd like it at this point in your life either. If you want to give it another shot, that's fine, but you seem like you'd just find the whole thing kinda of trite and pointless still because it kinda is most of the time.

My problems with New Who are mostly season seven; I positively love the first six seasons, faults and all, but I just considered this last one unforgivably bad (aside from Asylum of the Daleks and The Snowmen). The nice thing about Doctor Who, though, is that you can theoretically return to it in a year or two (when they get a new Doctor or companion or writer) and potentially have a completely different show to watch. In that vein, I know many people have trouble getting into season one. I did too, actually! I thought it was kinda dumb and just wasn't feeling it. I pressed on at the urging of a friend and started to fall in love with the show come season two (when David Tennant is the Doctor). After I caught up with the show (I started watching I think just as season six was ending) I went back and re-watched season one and developed a new appreciation for it.

It's also worth noting that the show takes a very different direction come season five, not only with Matt Smith as the Doctor, but because Steven Moffat becomes the showrunner (replacing Russell T. Davies). Those who loved Tennant and Davies often have a negative reaction to this, while those who love Smith and Moffat will sometimes dislike previous seasons, but I think most fans enjoy if not respect them all.

My best suggestion is, if you have a middling reaction to Doctor Who, skip around. Try episodes that have different Doctors in different seasons or just an episode with a description that catches your fancy. I put together a list of my favorite Doctor Who episodes (only seasons one thru four currently) if you're interested in giving some other episodes a go.

Watch the weeping angels. And don't blink. Oh and watch the silence, too... what was I talking about again? Oh yes, you should watch anything with David Tennant.

But Tennant might not be his Doctor. My brother and I prefer Smith and our room mate loves Eccleston. Also, which silence? Silence in the Library or the Silence, which is a monster that Smith faces?

The Silence would probably refer to the monster in season six. The enemy in Silence in the Library is Vashta Nerada, and the title foreshadows .
