Obviously both are ideal, but usually for budget reasons one or the other needs to be picked. Would you rather something picturesque, but super choppy? Or something really smooth, but nothing special to look at?

Uhhhhhh....I guess beautiful? Much better for the sake of having memorable, screen-shot quality scenes, and in the end, I'd prefer a game with low FPS but better graphics over the opposite, usually.

Smooth can look beautiful, but I'm talking about the beauty of the frames, not beauty of motion

I don't think choppy animation can look beautiful?

So you prefer smooth then? Me too, but a lot of people like choppier stuff with like hand painted frames

I mean, I guess. I really need examples here.

A lot of anime does this. They want each frame to have lots of detail, so the animations tend to only have a few frames

Ah, okay. I'm with you now. I prefer smooth then, yes. Weird considering that I adore Mecha anime which is known for this, but nothing annoys me more than lazy fight scenes.

I think you are mistaking animation for overall aesthetic choice or cinematography.

No I'm talking about frames per second

Smooth, no contest. Those "beautiful" animes look real goddamned stupid when they move like a log in stop-motion.

What about FPS? Most if not all anime are made 23 FPS regardless of quality so I'm really not sure what you're asking here.

Think late Powerpuff Girls/Dexter's Lab vs. early: One favors more polish and surface detail frame-by-frame while the other uses more frequent redrawings and animation gimmicks to simulate fluid, realistic motion.

Well then whatever the early one counts as since one of them is good animation and the other is well
    not good.

Framerate is part of graphics, though. Are you don't mean art style?

Yeah see, the later seasons make for better screenshots, I think that's what he was getting at. Whereas the former is prone to things like...

but in motion it's gorgeous as all hell.

Well, I was just talking about animation, which is a broad term that includes art style. My example though would be a little different? Not sure how to explain it better right now.

    Lemme try:

Something that operates at 30 FPS (or even at 60 FPS with skips) but makes better use of those frames and pushes its limitations, whether in art style or texture detail, is better than something that moves like a hot knife through butter. Am I ballparkin' it?

Not saying I agree, jus' tryna make sure we all understand one another
