Aside from cookie cutter characters it was pretty good.
Mako was adorable and I wish the other pilots were developed more.
Ron Perlmans character was so silly but only he could pull it off
    Idris Elba is still hot

Cookie cutter characters huh? Oh well, I'm sure it was mostly made for the giant machine vs. monster anyways.

I will say that the effects are amazing. That's really it though.
There were a lot of times where I couldn't tell what was happening in fights. In tems of story, the movie should have done something more simpler than this. The characters also pretty much suck. Charlie Day's character was the brightest thing for me.

I realize that it may seem that way for me. To me though, it started off with that potential; to be so etching that had a good story. The tone of the film made it feel like it wanted to be taken more seriously than people were giving it credit. I mean, it really did have interesting points that it seemed like the movie would explore, but they are just left behind.

And , it's over 2 hours long.if you're going to last that long, you need something driving it that makes it worth that run time to me. It seems that every movie that it going over 2 hours this summer needed one more look at in the editing room.

It has a character plot line that's needed, and doesn't feel forced. It scratches the surface for a cultural differences. Ron Perlman. And their all out assault to the portal meant quite a bit as far as "we will not give up this planet." Plus, metal men punching godzilla suits in the face. And that's what it's all about.

    Sollllld.

But seriously- it's for people who grew up watching monster movies like that- giving life to that childlike imagination that filled in all those gaps so many years ago.

...And Godzilla movies are about two hours + each entry, and they offer nothing except Godzilla and his opponent.

I will say that as a mech vs Kaiju movie, it really does deliver. It really shows off the size of the threat the Kaiju bring, and there are some things that were really fun about the fights. In that part, it does succeed.

However my complaint is simply that it has this the tone the movie gave off right from the get go does not mesh with what it ended up being. To me, it wanted to be seen more than just mechs fighting Kaiju, but as the movie progressed, it just lost that idea.

I really did like Charlie Day in the movie though. He really brought the awe and wonder of the world the movie set up. Also, his entire side of the story; that was something interesting. It's only slightly explored though and it really doesn't help in the long run. While it was my favorite part of the movie, I really do have to admit that Day's story could have been completely written out.

See, you're making way too much of it. The reason it has a serious tone from the get-go is because it needs to sell the action. Afterall, what good is action without a reason to take a side or without any gravity?

It's all an excuse for the action. Every bit of the movie is an excuse for more action or it's referencing another monster movie/series. That's how it worked in Godzilla, and it's how Gundam has always worked. The more they sell you the universe, the more invested in the action you are. It's not trying to be deep or serious, it's making a reason.

I honestly do not feel that I'm making too much of it. To me, I'm putting the whole movie into perspective. Trust me, I know that it's silly to harp on the story of a monster movie. It is something to go see, but only as a spectacle for the eyes. The movie left me empty at the end of it all though. It had potential to explore and to do things different.

Return of Godzilla could've explored technology advancements leading to a deadlier kind of war. It didn't because it's Godzilla, not Metal Gear.

Yo what Metal Gear did you play

The only thing those games are about is how long it takes Kojima to deliberately bleed away his entire fanbase

Soooooo PACIFIC RIM WAS FUCKING AWESOME OK.

The spectacle...yeah, beats everything this year and most of this decade. The setting was awesome, and honestly (besides the obvious Jaegers being impossible in reality and other things) felt very believable to me. The characters were simple WHICH IS OK because they were done well, especially Charlie Day and Idris Elba. There wasn't any part of the film where I was like "Ok, that was just stupid," and that's rare for me in summer blockbuster films like this. The music...worked, I honestly can't remember any specific themes. The pacing was good, though some parts kinda confused me with the timeframe of events in the film. Uh...dunno what else to say really.

    GIANT ROBOTS FIGHTING GIANT MONSTERS

FUCK OFF WITH THAT GROWN UPS 2 SHIT

THIS IS LIKE THE FILM I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR MY WHOLE LIFE

    THANK GOD IT DIDN'T FAIL

My favorite part was when everyone turned to tang.
