Why would they be carrying matches and not lighters? There was that scene where Jake was trying to light a flame, but his matches kept striking out. That's when I think "Can we get a lighter up in this *****?"
Probably just to increase the intensity of the scene. Because he had to light multiple matches before the stick actually got lit, the creatures got closer and were almost about to kill him. It's just to create some supsense.
