A severely autistic teenager, who has never been able to talk, spoke about her feelings about autism using a computer. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RKMxwRfc9uQ&eurl=http://drx.typepad.com/psychotherapyblog/2008/02/autistic-teenag.html
Wow, that was very interesting. I'm glad to see Carly now has a way to communicate with others and can be more a part of things. It would be interesting if she could give more information on what it is like to be autistic so that we can understand how severe this condition is. Good find in the news.
glad you brought this up fang, I looked at this thread a couple of times saying "why should I read this?" but I gave it a chance it was really interesting. Autism is one of the most vexing type of disabilities since scientists know only a fair amount about it. The fact that someone with severe autism can actually communicate though...(carly) you look at her and wonder, "am i so different?" she may be a girl and act wayyyy differently than I do, but compared to my friends who are girls at my school, she seems pretty similar to any of them, in terms of likes and dislikes, etc.
Wow. I can't believe it. I've forgotten how hard it was for kids with autism to communicate. Now if only parents with autistic kids decide to buy them computers with speech programs installed, it'd pretty much open a wide range of possibilities. Heck, I wouldn't be surprised if a few of our members were as well. Definitely shows looks can be deceiving...
:/ The only problem is, not all Autistic kids are alike. The only reason we haven't done this yet is because I know my brothers would tear up a computer instantly if we gave them one. They don't know how delicate technology is. Maybe in a few years, but not now...
that is really smart... i mean i wouldn't of thought of that. Using a computer is a great way to express your feelings coz majority of the people you wouldn't know anyway (as long as you don't post your personal details)
To be autistic is kinda odd, since it mainly to do with how we communicate with the others around us, and some times it can be hard since most of the time we just don't get what we're being told, although we have a good scene of reality, we prefer to be in our own little worlds. We also tent to obsess about one small area of something we like... How do I know this? Simple I'm autistic my self
Hmmm...very interesting. I'm Autistic too. but I have only a mild form of Autism. It's called Asperger's Syndrome. and it's one of the Autism Spectrum Disorders.
I'm glad she found a voice, I wish that everyone with autism could be understood like Carly. Autism means that their brains work differently it doesn't mean their stupid. There was a man with autism that saw a city and when he got home he drew every single detail that he saw.
I really feel sorry for her... i hope she gets a date... and the guy better be patient because she types slow ^ ^
