I've always been attracted to comic books. They're just usually wacky, contain great art, and are a pleasure to read while waiting for video to reconcile with some nice tea and some good music blaring. More than ever before, I've recently been trying to get into them even more. So, here I am asking for recommendations. I really don't want to get into super hero comics, at least from the big two because that requires a lot of money, time, patience, and hating of my life. I'm more into stand alone comics, and mini series anyways.

Comics I already have/am already into:

    • Some from the Mega Man Archie comics series
    • Some from the Sonic the Hedgehog Archie Comics series
    • A few from the Scud the Disposable Assassin series
    • Most of the Mass Effect comics
    • Every Halo graphic novel ever.
    • A few of the original TMNT comics
    • Watchmen
    • V for Vendetta
    • The Sandman
    • Hellboy
    • Concrete
    • Scott Pilgrim series
    • Deus Ex: Icarus Effect
    • Batman: The Killing Joke

That's literally EVERY comic I own. Every single one.

    PLEASE, NO MANGA

Some comics I've heard good things about. I haven't read any of these yet though so yeah (and yes, they're mostly superhero since that's what I know ._.)

    -Old Man Logan
    -Maus
    -All-Star Superman
    -Sandman
    -Fables

I get this mentality, I used to be this way, but if nothing else you should give Geoff Johns' Aquaman a try. I can't remember what the exact volume is but it's a New 52 book. It's absolutely amazing and easily one of the best books out atm. Unfortunately Johns just left the book and it's getting a new writer, but John's run is very self-contained so you cold just read that and nothing else. It's issues #1-25. You cold get the trades easily.

I hear the current TMNT book from IDW is astounding, so maybe that.

I read the first couple issues of Transformers: More Than Meets the Eye and Robots in Disguise from IDW and they were great as well, so maybe try those out. They do have a pre-existing continuity but the stories themselves don't require much knowledge from what I've read.

I haven't read it myself, but I hear Planetary by Warren Ellis is on the same level as Watchmen in terms of quality.

Yeah that's all I can recommend for someone who does not want superhero books. I get not wanting to read from the big two for financial reasons, I'm having to put the books I'm reading from them on hold because I don't have enough money right now, but to not want to read superhero books for whatever preconceptions you have is a mistake in my opinion. There are some amazing stories out there and you're only limiting yourself by not being open to them.

See, now we're making progress. I don't care if it's superhero, I care if someone goes DUDE YOU NEED TO READ ALL FOUR HUNDRED ISSUES OF THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN AND ALL TWO HUNDRED OF DEAD POOL. SO GUUUD. Uh huh. Yeah. Thanks.

    Any product summaries here?[DOUBLEPOST=1386717441][/DOUBLEPOST]

Well DC did New 52 in 2011 which put all of their books at #1 and created a new continuity, though it's debatable how effective that was considering they still reference pre-52 events, though it's not so bad that you couldn't jump in like I did.

Marvel also launched a new lineup called Marvel Now in 2012 that had all new #1s but was not a serpate continuity, instead it created starting points for characters that still don't require much knowledge. I know absolutely nothing about Guardians of the Galaxy, Nova, and Iron Man (at the time I started reading Iron Man anyway and not including the movies) and I had zero problems knowing what was going on.

Trust me, I was saying the same thing not too long ago, but once you get your footing it's not bad at all. A simple wiki-search and read can solve most of your problems concerning the 70+ years of history for some of these characters.

Unless you are just completely opposed to it, in which case... your loss, but I would still encourage you to explore a little. Particularly the New 52 Aquaman book. I can't say enough good things about it.

Though I will admit to my own fault that I should be reading more IDW and Image than I am (which is basically nothing), but having limited funds means I'm only going to read what I can afford and am interested in.

Also, from what I've experienced you can just read the arcs of certain volumes and don't need to read the 300 issues that come before and after it. This isn't always the case, but still.

Side-note, I didn't love All-Star Superman. I thought it was good, but I wouldn't call it the best Superman story ever told like some would.

I follow series more than anything else because I know some people who do buy comics and graciously lend me them so I'm just gonna give you a few compass points rather than trying to get you into a dead end.

Alright, so I noticed you haven't read Empowered. It's a superhero comic, but it's the only series I've ever recommended to someone one day and had them tell me it was one of the best things they've ever read the next. I don't think it's necessarily a good match for you as a person because you're a guy with opinions, but it's much better written than most things you'll find stocked on shelves. It's around $15 a volume and as of tomorrow there will be 8 of them. I acquired my set over the course of several years, but if you can't find the money I won't fault you for it. Still, if you respect my opinion at all, you'll prioritize this over the following recommendations.

Daisy Kutter: The Last Train, is a pretty solid one. It's a oneshot set in a kind of wild west world. It hasn't had the same effect as some thing have had, but I do like almost everything in it on a more abstract and artistic level. The author, Kazu Kibuishi also has a series, Amulet, coming out by volume currently, it's okay but it feels like it targets a different kind of person. More importantly though, he did the editing for a series of shorts by many different artists called Flight. If you like stand alone entries, you'll like Flight

Lost At Sea. If you've read and liked Scott Pilgrim, you should read O'Malley's other big work. I think it's brilliant at expressing tone and emotional content, but it won't resonate with you the same way, I guarantee it. Depending on who you are, you might even think it's irrational and bad. Still, worth checking out.

North World. Another Oni Press entry, but of a fantasy flavor this time. It's 3 volumes. 2 main story and 1 side stories. It's good and enjoyable, nothing huge but a pretty consistent crowd pleaser.

One last thing, everything else there was released either as a one time thing or by volume but there is one serial that I think is special enough to warrant mention here: Bedlam. Don't wanna give you too much away, but it's good so far.

Anyhow, disclaiming right now that my taste is decidedly anti-Marvel/DC. I don't follow traditional superhero comics because I hate the art style, storytelling style, characters and business practices associated with them. So take that into consideration.

Old Man Logan is about Wolverine fucking around in the future when the Marvel villains haven beaten nearly all of the other heroes. Wolverine fights a Symbiote T-Rex.

Maus I think is exploration of the effects of World War II on civilians through the eyes of mice being oppressed by cats. HINT HINT. But it gets tons of good reviews so yeah.

All-Star Superman is Superman with his MAXIMUM POWER, but he only gets a year left to live.

Fables is about characters from traditional fairy tales and folk stories after being driven out of their homes and into modern New York.

SEE! THEN YOU'RE PERFECT TO REC ME STUFF BECAUSE I DON'T MIND SUPER HERO COMICS JUST MARVEL/DC AHHHH[DOUBLEPOST=1386721165][/DOUBLEPOST]
The problem is that they didn't take the chance to rewrite characters or give them new stories. It just feels like a continuation from an earlier point. It's just not a smart way to reboot something, especially since a lot of characters really needed a reboot.

    Of course not, that's Supreme.[DOUBLEPOST=1386721227][/DOUBLEPOST]

    THESE ALL SOUND AWESOME.

But... they did? This is part of the reason why a lot of people don't like New 52, because it's drastically different in some places. Yeah most of the major characters are more or less the same, but there are enough differences to differentiate between the old and new and make both worthwhile. And new stories? That's what they're doing. That's what the point is. They're publishing new stories right now. Unless you mean something other than making new stories by "give them new stories."

No, it's not a smart way to reboot something, but you can make the best of it like I did. When 52 started out it was a mess. It's starting to get a little better, but it still is definitely not as good as it could be. Marvel observed this and launched Marvel Now making a point to not make these same mistakes.

Like what you like though, I won't try to convince you any farther.

    um... what?

But you can't really ignore Liefeld's history of the character before the reboot.

I am not into comics, but I have accumulated some of them nonetheless. I own:

    • Doctor Who #9 from the IDW series. Particularly notable because it's a special edition of it of which only 2,000 copies were made.
    • All three comics from the comic adaptation of Star Wars Episode I. The first volume is notable because it has two covers. Apparently there was a mistake in the part of the machine that staples all the pages together. I'm positive that it will be worth millions of cents one day.
    • All of the Bionicle comics, though they're not organized at all and the very first ones are in pretty bad condition.
    • Some Star Wars comic starring Luke Skywalker during his time as an apprentice to a clone of Emperor Palpatine. I have not seen it in years, but I'm positive that it's somewhere in my house.
    • Another Star Wars one featuring Boba Fett. I do not remember which one.
    • The Walking Dead: Volume 1. I bought it for my parents as a souvenir from a con because they're into the show, but it's probably still mine because they haven't touched it in half a year.

Well, you could... it's a reboot... in a different continuity... with a character who looks and acts completely different...

Except all their old stories carried over and the characters act the exact same and there was basically no point in rebooting if that's all they were going to do- just travel back in time so they could tell different stories. They could've instead just told different stories....

Supreme changed everything when Alan Moore rebooted the character. They started from a new origin point
