Light? Don't get me wrong. I love the Death Note ending, it's one of the most beautifully developed ending scenes in any anime I have ever seen (so much symbolism and the L reference at the end was perfect), but I just really liked Light's character. I was kinda hoping for him to live personally and have him ruling the New World (which would be destined to fall obviously). Also, the shinigami Ryuk talks to at the end of the Special Episode 38 was pretty strongly hinted to be Light transformed into shinigami (he told Light in the beginning a person who uses the Death Note would neither go to Heaven nor Hell, and he tells him to "drop the notebook, you could see something you won't forget for the rest of your life. Isn't that right Light?"), a sad end in my opinion, but eerily awesome at the same time. Thoughts?

No, not really. Light was a conceited psycho who, in the words of Near, mistook himself for a God. He needed to go down.

I did like it that the main character dies.

I felt sorry for Light. He was good at first, and I thought it was alright that he was taking criminals out, because they're just trouble. Then he became insane and his power corrupted him. He was in the wrong, but I still felt sorry for the guy.

Light had the idea that he was better than everyone else, and because of this, he needed to be brought down. It was his downfall. Light Yagami was a wonderful guy with a strong sense of justice, capable of achieving great things. But the second he picked up that Death Note, the beast called Kira took over and needed to be elliminated.

The ending did bring me to tears, I can't say what about it that did, I felt sorry for the person Light used to be. But Kira? Kira was a murderer who thought he was doing right, I suppose you can't blame him, but after everyone constantly chased after him, you'd think he'd get the damn hint.

Hmmmmm... Well it's not that I feel bad for Kira, more so that I feel bad for Light himself, as you said. That part at the end of the special episode 38 was also pretty weird and sad too (where they basically say Light became a shinigami).

Yeah, Light didn't deserve what he got; Death. Sadly though, it was the only way to get rid of Kira. Light Yagami just ended up having to go with Kira.
It's almost as if he's 2 different people.

R:FVOG was pretty startling. I always pondered the concept of being a shinigami after death, but never expected them to actually enforce it in the show. I thought for a while after I saw it, and since every couple thousand years, a shinigami has to die, and there are a limited amount of shinigami, using a death note must make the user a shinigami. If not, then shinigami would undoubtably die off, and there would be a huge population explosion. Even if humans do have a preset lifespan, shinigami help by elliminating some humans before theird actual set death and keep the population at balance. Furthermore, if this is the case, and Death Note users dying is the only way to get more shinigami (considering they cannot reproduce) then it's almost as if Death Notes were MEANT to be dropped onto earth.

The Shinigami king has one serious line of thought, despite how the other Shinigami treat him like a ****in' ****** xD

No. He tried to do good by killing criminals with the Death Note, but he failed miserably. The worst part is that he got other people to do it when he was being the new L. And it seems like the people who supported Kira seemed brainwashed somehow. Well, mostly Mikami.

Yea, well I suppose you could sympathize with him earlier on. But you're right, once he started using Misa, Kira was truly evil, and not just some vigilante with a God complex.

Yea that makes sense, since the Human World relied on Shinigami for a good deal of natural order. And yea, the Shinigami King is kind of like some old guy in a retirement home you can manipulate easily. xD

Yeah... when I see Death Note, I view it like this:
I don't know if any of you here are familliar with a show called Twin Peaks, but basically its about a girl's murder and the detective trying to find the killer. In the end, there turns out to be a ghost named Bob, who is, "The evil within us all". I constantly compare this show to Death Note (Especially Detective Cooper's mad obsession with coffee and odd methods of finding criminals xD) and I believe that, in the world of DN, Kira is "the evil within us all". He takes over Light via the Death Note, takes over Misa via love for Light, and takes over the whole world in support for Kira. He even takes over more open-minded cops like Matsuda. Kira is, in a sense, the reason for all things bad in the world. And you could say that Kira only takes over people when they are in their most vulnerable state (once again, this is said in Twin Peaks) which, of course, is boredom. Humans, even Shinigami like Ryuk and eventually Light, will do anything to kill boredom {pun not intended)

So, in short, boredom really does kill.

Nope.....not a single bit. The guy needed to die. I've read the manga but I've never seen the anime. However......if Light did become a shinigami....then.....what's stopping him from continuing to kill off criminals and such? It might be one of the rules...to not over kill..but I'm not sure.....Too many rules. can't remember them.

I'm pretty sure that when you become a shinigami, you lose all memories of being human. If we look at it from a Kingdom Hearts or Fullmetal point of view, we can say its like becoming a Nobody or Humonculus where you're basically just a remnant of yourself. Furthermore, certain traits of your personality may change. Pretty much all shinigami tend to be laid-back and generally bored. Light, as a shinigami, went to Ryuk what could possibly be hundred of years later, not knowing who Ryuk was, only that he liked apples and he was once in the world of humans. He begs Ryuk to tell him the story of-- basically himself. And when Ryuk finishes, he disappears. Shinigami don't just say "I dont like this human" or "Let's change the world" and even Light loses his strong sense of justice in death. It's implied that he drops his Death Note, but we never do find out if he remembers who he is. Sinc ehe can't remember, he just lives the way any other shinigami would-- kill to survive.

The Director's cut basically makes way for a sequel, although I doubt there'll be one.

A sequel could be good if done correctly, though I doubt it would ever match the original.

That's correct. The original is truly an amazing anime..

Me and my dad had a huge discussion about many possibilities for a DN sequel but in all honesty, it just turne dout to sound like a bad fanfiction xD

This is a reminder from your friendly neighborhood psychopath to stay on topic. :3

If it amuses you, I haven't finished DN yet and I'm viewing this thread.
