I'm not quite sure how i feel about this topic. I mean, i guess it's good that someone's doing something to get back at them for taking down MegaUpload but still...was this really the right way to go about it?

    That's what Im wondering too.

I don't think the attacks were worth it. Yeah, I like how they're being tough about this whole situation, what with pirating and SOPA. But I don't think attacking them will bring out a positive outcome.

Think of it this way. A parent smacks their child when they do something bad. Anon is the parent. I think that if they don't want to listen to the populace then we retaliate when they **** up.

I somehow feel SOPA supporters will use this to their advantage, like "They think they can scare us! We'll show them we're not afraid."
    Or something like that.
    Conspiracy theory pops into head*

    That was an interesting read...

While on the one hand, it did seem wrong for them to take down Megaupload, it feels like Anonymous over reacted a bit. This is the kind of attack that people could easily manipulate into being pro-SOPA/PIPA. Yesterday's black out worked out for the internet buy getting many politicians on the side of those who were against the bill. Something like this could easily be seen as "terrorism" and end up making the blackout happen in vain.

These are just scare tactics, they know if they do this Washington will be scared. But I hope Anon knows what they're doing.

Yeah, those guys are seriously pissed off right now. If another website as big as megavideo gets shut down, I'm pretty sure we're going to get another attack like this, if not bigger

    They reacted very very fast.
    Like really.

But I don't think they are going about this the right way...
As Krowley dear said,I do think SOPA will now try and prove its point etc.

I just relised I mentally counted SOPA as a person.

There's even a new "Megaupload" already. I think it was taken down, though.

I tried to access it and it gave me a 500 error.

The problem is that throuhgout history, there are more and more examples that actions like this do not help get your point across. Think of the UK when the Suffragists and Suffragettes were trying to get the vote for women, Before the Suffragettes came onto the scene, the Suffragists with their peaceful ways of talking to MPs and spreading the word, and sometimes peaceful protest, were near to working before the suffragettes started militant campaigns and being violent.

The MPs didn't decide to give women the vote until after the first world war when they helped during the war effort. Now, Anonymus here, I see as being the Suffragettes, and al the protesting and stuff like Wikipedia and us even, being the Suffragists. This sort of thing, even though it's not related to SOPA, could shift the balance against us. We need to show congress that as an online community we have the judgement and maturity not to abuse, but to effectively use the tools at our disposal on the internet, or they'll just take it away.

I think this was not only an avenging mission, but also a show of muscles.
If Anon is able to take down sites by the FBI, you know they are able to take down more and do more damage.
This is why I'm not worried about any legislation touching the internet, as it would be shut down by Anon within the hour.
Regardless if it's the right way long term, a DDoS attack is the fastest attack to set up and execute, and Anon, more than anyone do it successfully and get the word out.

like with all of anonymous' activites: i wish they would stop doing this. and i wish people would stop giving them the attention they want.

i agree with that, and i do think that people do abuse all this freedom on the internet. i just hope those people don't ruin it for everyone else.

You basically mean they've painted a giant red target on their backs? Make that a bigger target since they've already pissed off most all authorities around the world. I don't want someone boasting their ability just so they can show off their skills. Otherwise when do they stop?

You believe Anon to be a responsible parent and not a drunkard beating their children?
They are an emotional group of people who do what they want when they want, they aren't predictable, and they have access to shut down major internet networks across the globe.
They're like a child with a rocket launcher, kill anything they see as wrong or too powerufl. THat isn't the way they should go about this.

Totally agree, if anything this pushes officals to think more about further restricting the internet, not opening it up.
