Figured I may as well make a thread for them. In the vein of Skylanders and Disney Infinity, Nintendo is releasing sets of figures of characters from their vast history of games that are compatible with various games for the Wii U (through the Gamepad) and the 3DS (through a separate peripheral, and through the bottom screen of the New 3DS). The only revealed figures thus far are meant to be compatible primarily with the Smash Bros. games, but will also have application in other games. A couple of things: An insider source is reporting that Gamestop is planning force scarcity with the Shulk amiibo character, as they were rumored to do with Xenoblade Chronicles. [source] Another game has been announced to update for amiibo support, and it's...not what you're expecting.
Considering how many people bought "used" copies of Xenoblade (including myself) that had a different box design from the first run copies and unused Club Nintendo codes, I'd say it's more than rumor. Hopefully if they do that underhanded bullshit again, it backfires on them again (seriously, no one was buying the game for $90. Hell, I only got mine when they dropped the price to $50).
New info from today's Nintendo Direct: Wave 4 of the Smash Bros. amiibo was announced to come in the spring, with Robin, Lucina, Wario, Charizard, Ness, and Wario. The first wave of Super Mario amiibo was announced to come in March, with Mario, Luigi, Peach, Yoshi, Toad, and Bowser. These ones seem to hold more data for Mario Party 10 so far, letting you use them as in-game characters that can have power-ups and such given to it, not unlike the Smash Bros. amiibo. If you use a Smash Bros. amiibo for Mario Party 10, the Smash data will be erased. amiibo integration was announced for Project: S.T.E.A.M., of all things. Given the game's developers, using an amiibo of any Fire Emblem character will allow you to use said character in-game. If the character dies in battle, though, you can't revive them until after the battle ends, at which point you can simply use the amiibo again to bring them back. Details were revealed for amiibo integration for a couple of other games; see the OP for those. Nintendo will be rereleasing the Marth amiibo (and possibly others?) due to their popularity and scarcity.
While it is unfortunate that each Amiibo can only save one game's data at a time, it is very nice that the same character from any series of Amiibo will function identically. This would be especially nice for scarce characters, but seems almost wasted on Super Mario characters that aren't Rosalina.
From Nintendo's financial report released today: A new free Wii U app will be released later in the first half of this year to interact with amiibo. Tapping an amiibo to the Wii U Gamepad will unlock a short demo of a corresponding NES/SNES game. Once the demo ends, the amiibo can be tapped again to unlock another demo from the same game. Nintendo is planning to release amiibo in card form later this year. More amiibo series are planned beyond Smash Bros. and Super Mario. This summer, a peripheral will be released to enable amiibo communication with older 3DS models.
Does this mean like... Nintendo trading card game? oh my god Nintendo desperately wants my money and I desperately want to give it to them.
Lots of amiibo stuff in today's Direct! New waves of Smash amiibo coming in May (Robin, Lucina, Wario, Ness, Charizard, Pac-Man), July (Palutena, Dark Pit), and September (Olimar, Bowser Jr., Dr. Mario, Zero Suit Samus, Ganondorf). Mewtwo and Lucas will be receiving Smash amiibo in the future as well. Splatoon will be getting a pack set of three amiibo--a male Inkling, a female Inkling, and a squid. Yoshi's Wooly World will be getting a set of three KNITTED Yoshi amiibo--one green, one pink, one blue. Card amiibo will be released in the fall alongside Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer. An amiibo peripheral for older 3DS models will release the same day. amiibo Tap, the app detailed above, will be released for the Wii U this spring for free.
A couple of new things: Fire Emblem if will use amiibo in much the same way as Code Name: S.T.E.A.M., in that using any Fire Emblem character's amiibo will unlock said character in the game. 3DS game Chibi-Robo! Zip Lash will come bundled with a Chibi-Robo amiibo this October. Once per level, using the amiibo will transform Chibi-Robo into Super Chibi-Robo, who is faster and has a longer plug cable.
In their Smash presentation today, Nintendo reiterated that every Smash Bros. character will receive an amiibo, including DLC characters (specifically mentioning new additions Ryu, Roy, and Lucas). To this end, they've announced the next wave of Smash amiibo, due to hit in September. This wave will feature Mr. Game & Watch (who will release with multiple poses), Duck Hunt, Zero Suit Samus, Ganondorf, Pikmin & Olimar, Dr. Mario, R.O.B. (who will release in different colors in Japan and overseas, in Famicom and NES colors, respectively), Mii Brawler, Mii Swordfighter, Mii Gunner, and Bowser Jr. Additionally, further amiibo were leaked by a Nintendo Twitter account. These include a special edition 8-bit Mario amiibo and a wave of Animal Crossing amiibo figures, featuring Isabelle, Tom Nook, K.K. Slider, and Mabel.
