I can honestly say that this frightens me reading this. That the US government would stoop so low as to remove the freedom of speech. I know these are hard times we live in but Freedom of Speech should never be considered to be taken away. Because with this one being taken away, I can see Freedom of the Press being taken away too. Newspapers and magazines having to be run past officials before they're printed.

News programs being watched and taken off the air if they say something the government doesn't agree with.

Not all Fascism looks like Adolf Hitler.

I just told my dad this, and he started to laugh:

    he said "America is finished"

and that made me laugh. Its kind of true. They are doing this because they think that if people keep talking about it, they will understand that its wrong. They want us to shut up. This is so ridiculous.

I really believed this would happen. I mean once the wiretapping, torture and homeboy security and all that got the big thumbs up, it was only a matter of time. But, the thing that gets me is the fact that it passed 405 to 6 in the House. All I can say is, "Why are we in this hand basket and where are we going?"

Trent Reznor was right all along.

Now we just wait for the Prescence to come down from the sky and sweep us away.

That is the most intelligent question I've heard the whole day.

This bill seriously shouldn't pass. Isn't this one of the ten ammendments? Exactly. This is all apart of Bush's plan to destroy us all. Outrageous. None of us should have trusted him in the first place. I told my mom and she said that We'd turn out like russia. Wow. They can't do this to us. I highly doubt this would pass anyway. I hope that we don't have to worry about this.

This honestly scares me. Imagine how many people would be thrown in jail for saying "F*** Bush!"
If America removes freedom of speech, America isn't America. It's one of the principals that this country was founded on and now they are slowly rebuilding the foundation of this country.
If this law gets passed I'm making an entire campaign comparing Bush to Emperor Palpatine from star wars. Now we need a Vader and a Caedus.

After reading your long post, as well as both links that you provided, I've come to the conclusion that you're taking something simple and going WAY out of control with it. Yes, all the things that you stated ARE possible, but the government would not do these things.

Are you all so ******ed that you think the government is some evil fascist empire of deceit and lies? God, have some damn pride in your country. And if not your country, at least have faith that your government is set enough in their beliefs and idealology to understand how this law contradicts not only what defines freedom in America, but what this country was founded on.

Now Libregkd, you're a smart guy, but what you're doing RIGHT NOW, that is called terrorism. You're turning your friends and your family against the government, your trying to convince us that the government is trying to control our every move, you're enstilling fear in us, and through fear comes desperation and violence. I can understand that you're trying to point out possible dangers in the near future, and as real as those dangers are, you're just promoting unpatriotic and radical beliefs.

In fact, that's how I believe I would define this thread, radical. You're going to extremes with how this act will be enforced, and while it is a good thing to point some of these things out to people, I'd rather you also tell the impressionable young members of this forum what good things can also come from this law.

It's not like there aren't REAL terrorists in America, real people that will use force to further their beliefs. This law is protecting us. There are American citizens that have already gone to war against America, muslims and islamofacsists aren't just in the Middle East. In fact, I remember a story a few years ago about how a Califnornian, (muslim) citezen turned out to be a suicide bomber in Iraq, and people were amazed at how he was in California one day, and killing America Soldiers the next. This danger is real, and while I'm not condemning the muslims in any way, with proper background, and enough gentle nudges (Aka, threads like this), you can turn anyone into a terrorist.

And btw, unless there is an amendment that is canceling out the first amendment, then this will have no affect on America's freedom of speech, as the amendments (Our rights) are above law.

Cin is telling the truth, but we also should consider that the people encharge are HUMAN. Human's with power. Power corrupts. Absolute power corrupts absolutely.

I have faith that our government won't actualy go crazy with this law but it is possible. But also unlikely. Then I do see way this law can help, but Imagine how many people could end up wrongfuly imprisoned.

In the end, I don't trust the government, but I have faith.

I think it's just a matter of thinking critically really. There's a point where even idiots can see hypocrisy in what is said and what is done regardless of whether or not it's propaganda. No one would stand for such a fascist way of life, especially Americans, who tend to remind themselves of freedom whenever they get the chance.

It's not going to be as bad as the first post makes it out to be. I highly doubt the police will take the time to arrest someone that says "I don't like this government." Yeah, this law is bad, but Cin also brings up a good point that the Amendments are above law. We won't lose out freedom of speech.

The first post isn't exactly what would happen, it's more what could happen, not necessarily what is going to happen.

Free speech has always been considered a given for us, and this law could only be the start of what is to come. Everything is going wrong in America, we won't be able to live comfortably like this forever, there's bound to sometime be some laws that are too harsh and generally disliked by the people , and of course there will sometime be something that causes our government to fall. No government has or will last forever, and so I agree with you for the main title of this thread in the prospect that we truly are ****ed. Not necessarily for this reason, but for a bunch of other ones combined.

The people who run this country don't care about you. So what would stop them from wanting to control every aspect of society? This law that libregkd posted is a prime example; All freedoms removed, everything monitored. Regardless of what any amendments say, it won't stop them from manipulating the citizens.

Now, as you said, this is only a possibility. And we're on tight rope as it is...

The more worried people are about their own security the more willing they are to give up their own liberty. Oh dear I appear to have left the door open for the conspiracy theorists =_=

    No conspiracies here kthxbai

I've always thought the govt. was doing too much outside it's bounds and sneaking around behind our backs. I agree with Franklin that those who give up liberty for safety deserve neither. This bill would not be quite as extreme at first but it could easily grow to be. Things happen in baby steps, so even if it poses no immediate threat I see nothing substantial stopping some people amending freedoms right out of the Constitution, the delegates can choose what they want to do once they're in. This is a lot of stretch on my part, but I don't think the government really wants to help everyone out. That's just me and my paranoia.
