Do we need war or should we always have peace?

I know its pretty simple question and will make you wonder a little, but try and add some reasons why we need or don't need war, please.

I think war is unavoidable and I also think that peace is an interlude to war =/ May seem pretty pessomistic but I think it's the truth.

There will almost always be war as long as there is prejudice and some prejudice is so deeply engrained in some cultures it will be hard to forcefully stamp it out.

I don't think it's possible to say whether we need war or not. But I suppose if there is a standoff between two nations over an issue that needs to be resolved and all other options have been exhausted then war is the only thing left =/

Without war how can we even know and appreciate what peace is? There is and never will be peace without conflict.

As Bunty says, sometimes all we have is war, talking and negotiations can only get us so far.

Both need each other to survive, without peace there would be no concept of war, but without war there would be no understanding of peace. There would just be existence.

Another factor being that human nature does not allow there to be true peace, the instinct to survive has been passed down though the race for thousand and thousands of years of human evolution. To suddenly enter a state of "full peace" would mean changing and altering what is written into our genes.

War is horrible, violent and messes up people's lives, it fills our history and shapes our future, but it also helps us to appreciate the world and the time that we have, it makes us realise how precious life can be, teaches us not to take the moments of peace for granted.

Whether we like it or not it is a part of who we are, and it always will be.

War is a very strange subject.

It is such a huge part of our history it seems as if it is inevitable, no matter how bloody, destructive, pointless, or costly it may be.

However, as far as war being inevitable goes, I do not believe that is true. War is merely an instinct; violence settling problems does not get us anywhere. Surely it can be avoided. Perhaps if we actually set our goals into achieving peace rather than achieving money wars could be avoided altogether.

    there will always be war
but it will be so nice if there wasnt

the worst part about it is that everyone is fighting even if they are from the same contry. Like racist people for an exmaple. they hate other races just because of who they are that is one on the main problaes that we are facing today in the world and with that hate there will always be fighting weither we like it or not unless we get past all that

As the wise creators of Avenue Q say, everyone's a little bit racist.

Racist people are generalized as being this big group of people creating hate crimes.

[I'm definitely not saying it's okay to be racist, by the way.]

The thing is, there will be fighting unless EVERYONE agrees to nonviolence, which would be the smarter thing to do.

    To bad it'll never happen.

We need a little of both. A balance. War and violence is not a bad thing at all, since that's what founded our country. Its what you do with violence.
I'm very sleepy right now, so I don't know if I'm making sense right now or not. XD

    A little of both.

At the moment we have to much war and little peace.

But as long as people have thier differences and get upset there will always be war.

It is almost impossible to have total peace because peace must be gained through means of war.

War is inevitable at times as man is an animal that is in basic nature violent ad territorial. Peace is often the result of seeing the damage that war causes. There is also the point that a lot of technological advances are driven by war and the threat of war. We are by nature a suspicious species and will probably never achieve the ideal peace. It at least gives mankind something to strive for.

Like what most other has said above me, we need a balance of war and peace. Without any sort of war, anyone would be able to invade our land, or even worse, the government would be able to do as they please, making our country no longer democratic. In the past, because we started civil wars, such as during the time Great Britian was the dictator of America, we were able to gain our freedom.

So, in short, war can never be abolished on Earth. Other countries will always start a war, needs will always be fought for, and it is inevitable. Humans all have evil within them, and the ones who succumb to that desire, that greed, will always start another war in the future. Whether it's for land, resources, or money, there is always a handful of people who want more, and it will never go away. And what about the people who want more rights? They are willing to fight for it because peace will not always work for them. Thus, war will never truly vanish on Earth...

In the end, as long as people can't get along even one-on-one, there is going to be some sort of aggression and it can grow to the size of a full scale war. I think it is through the acts of the extreme that do acts of war and hate which makes others say 'woah, I might not have liked those people in particular, but I certainly wouldn't go killing the regular civvies' etc. It helps us to see how bad people and situations can be and in the end helps promote more efforts to peace afterwards because we also take acknowledgment of the good people in it all too, and those who were just in a really bad situation and were used. So, along with everyone else, I sort of agree there will be acts of hostility on these levels and in the end, it does help us to value comprehending diversity better in the aftermath. If that's the only good thing about war, it is. Extremists who do the wars and initiate things so far hopefully get rid of some of their numbers too so that those of us who do want peace can savor it.

Okay, in my mind, there is no such thing as peace. No one will ever want peace. There will always be someone that wants to fight, get land, control, and feel doniment above others. So yes, I think there will always be wars.

I agree. There are just too many people who like to argue and start problems. As long as people continue to be like this, there will be no true peace.
War can't be avoided, since there will always be people out there who decide that they don't like a certain country or a group of people, and with the large amount of weapons of mass destruction, there will always be a threat of terrorist attacks and so on. War will never go away, and peace will not exist as long as people have aggression towards eachother.

I would love to have peace but others think that War will be the answer to the fights countries are having. Though war is not avoidable, we are still affected by it in some way. Everyone thinks differently about things. Some think going to war will stop everything for good. But you know if you fight fire with fire you get a larger fire that will ignite the place..... meaning the world

if there was no war, we woudl not know about peace, because wihtout war there is no peace, there is just being. but if there was onyl war, we would not know what peace was because you need one to have the other.

One of some of the aspects of war that peace doesn't provide is a motivation for certain technologies. War, on a "business perspective" is an opportune time for other businesses and economy in terms of commerence as there is a sudden demand for products and marketable resources. Sounds strange maybe, but it is true. War also "creates" some jobs for people, but can also force others into something they don't want to do obviously (refer to listing). War also puts things into perspective on several levels. War helps people get an opinion for themselves (or some might argue, to be brainwashed into another opinion).

War is unfortunately necessary, and even moreseo, has an impact, so that's why it won't be fading out of existence anytime soon.

The people don't need war, the super elites need it to keep the rabbits in line:

"The problem was how to keep the wheels of industry turning without increasing the real wealth of the world. Goods must be produced, but they must not be distributed. And in practice the only way of achieving this was by continuous warfare."

    -- George Orwell, 1984 - Chapter III

    Why ?

From the moment when the machine first made its appearance it was clear to all thinking people that the need for human drudgery, and therefore to a great extent for human inequality, had disappeared. If the machine were used deliberately for that end, hunger, overwork, dirt, illiteracy, and disease could be eliminated within a few generations. And in fact, without being used for any such purpose, but by a sort of automatic process -- by producing wealth which it was sometimes impossible not to distribute -- the machine did raise the living standards of the average human being very greatly over a period of about fifty years at the end of the nineteenth and the beginning of the twentieth centuries.

But it was also clear that an all-round increase in wealth threatened the destruction -- indeed, in some sense was the destruction -- of a hierarchical society. In a world in which everyone worked short hours, had enough to eat, lived in a house with a bathroom and a refrigerator, and possessed a motor-car or even an aeroplane, the most obvious and perhaps the most important form of inequality would already have disappeared. If it once became general, wealth would confer no distinction. It was possible, no doubt, to imagine a society in which wealth, in the sense of personal possessions and luxuries, should be evenly distributed, while power remained in the hands of a small privileged caste.

But in practice such a society could not long remain stable. For if leisure and security were enjoyed by all alike, the great mass of human beings who are normally stupefied by poverty would become literate and would learn to think for themselves; and when once they had done this, they would sooner or later realize that the privileged minority had no function, and they would sweep it away. In the long run, a hierarchical society was only possible on a basis of poverty and ignorance.
