Wow, you don't seem to like anything from before 2005. I liked Invader Zim when I was a kid and even though it's not as good as I remember, it still has good entertainment value thanks to nostalgia goggles and certain jokes that I didn't get when I was younger. It only got bad when in the last season, and even that had some quality episodes. As for its "distinct visual style" that kept it from sinking into oblivion, how do you explain Angry Beavers, Aaaaah! Real Monsters, and Rugrats? All of those had very generic visual styles and they're still popular among the people who knew Nick when it was still Nickelodeon.
To me it sounds like a pretty good dream. I don't have to pay child support on kids that aren't real, right?
I just looked it up and it seems to come from the Scottish slang word, "swagger," which describes how some Scots walk (that is, with a swaying motion). Can Kitty confirm?
