You might as well stop watching anime then because there is next to no lolDEEP anime. Ergo proxy isn't deep by a longshot. It's a typical sci-fi setting with a typical sci-fi story mixed in with some phycological aspects in order to make pretentious teens think it's the best thing ever. That being said, Ergo Proxy is good, but not because of LOLDEEP pretentious overtones, but because it is a beautiful well animated mystery show that keeps you in suspense and is a great example of a cyberpunk setting. Also the things that you described "uncover magic powerz and/or become the best in something and/or save the world, get the girl" are not themes, those are goals. If your going to tell me that any anime where the hero is trying to save the world is bad then you have a serious problem. Gurren lagann is a good anime because simply watching it inspiring and makes you go "**** YEAR!" The main character starts off as the most pathetic thing on the planet, no balls whatsoever. His brother however, is ****awesome and dreams of venturing above the surface of thier underground prison and despite his little brother's pussy nature, still takes him along in order for him to become a man. In the end, Simon does become a man, but not without going through some of the worse **** ever. His parents died when he was young, his brother died, during his adulthood he is betrayed by the entire human race that he fought for, his comrades die, he's thrown into prison, his fiance is taken control of by aliens, he tears through space and time in order to safe his fiance, battles through countless amounts of alien onslaughts, told that his energy generating is slowly but surely destroying the universe, battles in one epic duel with the king of despair in order to save humanity and his fiance, and he finnaly does all that and guess what happens? HIS FIANCE ****ING DIES! And you know what Simon does? Shed's a tear or 2, puts on his cape, and bids his freinds farewell as goes around wandering the Earth. THE GUY SAVES THE UNIVERSE AND ISN'T EVEN ACKNOWLEDGED BY EVERYONE FOR IT! For this sole reason is why people like Gurren lagann, because it shows the adventures of a young boy who becomes a man in the most awesome way ever. Those "goes a little deeper" anime are not deep at all, they use big words and peer into the human mind with 'HEPR A DERP! HUMANZ ARE FLAAAAAAAWED!" aspects, it doesn't matter what the goal of the anime is, but rather how it's done. All in all I can safetly say that your taste are sh- Whoops, thought you were being serious for a second there. 8/10 very good job my friend.
