What the mother is doing is that she's trying to hint to Azure Fang that

she's going to be killed, which after that her dead body is turned into a spirit for her to be able to tell them to leave as the wolves of azure, and then her body becomes normal again and she stays...dead :U

After that the plot is pretty much straightforward.
