L is from Death Note, a manga by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata. He's trying to defeat Light Yagami, who, under the alias Kira, is killing off criminals to be god of the new world with help from his Death Note. L is epic, by far the greatest character in the series, IMO.
